Welcome to the West Virginia University at Parkersburg Library!
EBSCOhost provides WVUP with a compilation of databases
that indexes magazine and journal articles and eBooks.
I'm going to demonstrate a simple search in one
EBSCOhost database called Academic Search Elite.
If you are in need of a journal article, Academic Search Elite provides
full-text information, dating back to 1985,
from a variety of academic disciplines and includes scholarly, peer-reviewed publications.
3,650 journals
are indexed in this database.
EBSCOhost can be accessed both on and off campus.
When you are on campus select "periodical databases."
If you are off campus, select "Off Campus Access" first.
Scroll down and choose "EBSCOhost."
Enter the user id and password. If you don't have a password, please call
the library with your student id number and request it.
The number to call is
304-424-8260.
Proceed by selecting EBSCOhost Web.
Scroll down and select Academic Search Elite.
I am going to look for articles
that offer advice on how to find a job.
My search term will be "job hunting." Before I hit the search button,
I want to show you three features that I use all the time.
If I want a full text article immediately,
I'll check the full text box. If I need a scholarly article from a peer-reviewed journal,
I'll check that box.
And if I want an article from a specific time period,
I'll add the date range.
Now, I will hit that search button. The database retrieved 55 results
for the term job hunting.
Using the Boolean operator "AND"
and adding the term resume
will narrow our search to 4 results. Let's explore an article
by clicking on the title,
"How to write a professional knockout resume to differentiate yourself."
You will see the title, author, journal information, and abstract.
Articles are available in HTML and PDFs.
With HTML files, you have an audio component.
Highlight a paragraph and select "listen"
if you want the database to read it to you.
You can add an article to a folder.
You can also print it, email it, or save it.
EBSCOhost makes it very convenient for you to cite
information that you use in a paper.
Choose the style, copy and paste the citation where you want it in your paper.
Always use another person's ideas responsibly.
Choose "result list" when you want to return to your results.
When you are done, please select "exit" to end your session.
If you need assistance with your search in EBSCOhost,
please come in to the library and ask or call
304-424-8260
We are always very happy to help you!
