Before we build far away, let’s build in the countryside,
do a renovation.
That’s a human problem.
Before thinking about someone else’s problem,
to solve our own.
SHOHEI SHIGEMATSU ARCHITECT
RAFAEL VIÑOLY ARCHITECT
It's not necessarily a building or an architecture
that is at war with the landscape.
It's about workers,
about not creating interference,
not creating conflicts.
The back space, along with the repetition,
the tonic... It's musical, you know,
it creates and determines what I call the urban scale,
the urban space.
In order for Brazil to grow uniformly
and without being invaded by models, aesthetics or ethics,
let's make our own ways of managing the country.
So, if the architect tries to recognize himself in a place,
he might somehow not be solving the existing problems well,
because he's solving another problem that doesn't really exist,
which is recognizing himself within the territory.
Maybe the lessons of buildings inserted in free spaces
of how to interfere in the city.
Our proposal is for the university to create a kind
of metropolitan boarding school.
The same way there is the rural boarding school,
you could have a metropolitan one, involving students of architecture,
geography, economy, sociology, law, and so on.
That this cycle can bring quality transformation
instead of quantity ones to the urban territory.
This isn't being discussed today,
that's why the model of social licensing
we're talking about here is key.
I think without a doubt mining has a serious impact
on the urban.
Allowing for families to be together,
as amazing as it seems,
that is still the essential root of every being.

This proves it's a developing country,
still with huge challenges in front of us,
contrasting with great things of architectural quality,
quality interventions, which I think have very important roles.
There's always a solution,
because architecture is medicine,
how do you say it? A magic medicine.
What is Belo Horizonte's identity?
What is its image,
what is its soul?
