00:05: English subtitles by: Aga "Aeth" Jedrzejczyk 00:12: Board games at Wookie's
00:22: First of all, hi. 00:24: Second of all, all the best on a happy
New Year's Eve 2010. 00:30: When the New Year comes, everyone makes
their New Year resolutions, don't they? Some resolve to lose weight, some resolve to gain
weight, 00:40: while I resolve I would sometimes let
Samuel win, because his spirits are getting low and he doesn't want to play so many games
with me anymore. 00:48: So I started fulfilling that resolution
by playing Kingpin. 00:53. Oh, because anyway, we're talking about
Kingpin today. 00:55: We're talking about a new Polish game.
00:57: It's a game for two players, it's a very cool game, done in a very cool way,
01:03: it's got great graphic design and is a great interval between other things and
a great game in itself. 01:08: We're talking about Kingpin.
01:10: Let's see what we have in the box. 01:14: The box is very nice, quite large,
01:18: I like it very, very much on the outside, 01:20: but unfornutalety, when we open it,
what we really have is the biggest flaw of the game.
01:27: Not very serious, but a flaw anyway. 01:30: We have the manual, we have the board,
01:35: and we have plenty of empty space. 01:38: There's the CD and here we could put
tiles. 01:40: We have three available armies,
01:44: and, I don't know, there's enough place for a fourth army,
01:48: mayby a fifth one, there could be cards put in there.
01:50: It looks as though someting was still supposed to be put here.
01:54: The box could have been a little flatter, but Kuznia Gier has its standards, I guess,
so we won't yell at them. 02:02: The board can be put on one of two
sides, 02:05: white or black.
02:07: The white one is basic, the black one a bit more advanced, but in truth the are
both interesting to play on. 02:12: At the beginning I played on the white
board, but now I play on the black one, so it's really up to you.
02:16: Let's say I'll play on the white one, cause you're still a little green.
02:22: Next, after opening the board, each player chooses their side of the conflict,
their own mafia. 02:28: And we have Yakuza,
02:34: the Italian mafia, 02:40: and the Russian mafia.
02:43: In theory, the Russians have better firepower,
02:47: the Italians move better by cars, 02:50: and Yakuza has better snipers.
02:54: Once we have chosen our side - let's say I'll play the Italian mafia,
02:58: and my opponent choses the Russians -
03:02: we have to place action tokens on the board.
03:08: In the advanced mode the action track is not used, but in the basic one it is.
03:12: We start from turn 25; here it is, in the corner,
03:17: and every time a player takes an action, we move his token,
03:21: but when we perfrom a successful attack, we don't.
03:24: So this taking-turns idea rewards the ones who fight,
03:28: because the first player whose turns run out loses the game.
03:33: Apart from that, we need our fire tokens, 03:38: and we are ready to go.
03:40: At the beginning, a player takes three soldiers marked with white on the flip side,
03:45: puts them on the table, and they are his first available army.
03:48: When he plays them on the board, he draws the next one from the remaining five.
03:53: Now, what can a player do in his turn. 03:55: As I said, he can move or he can attack.
03:57: Moving can be done in a couple of ways. 04:00: It can be playing a new warrior, a
new tile, on the board, 04:06: it can be moving it, turning it at
the same time, if you want to, turning it only,
04:10: or switching two of them like that, see? That's a move too.
04:16: When we do that, our track token moves. 04:19: But what about attacks? This is a bit
more important (let me zoom). 04:30: Let's see who we have here.
04:32: We have these soldiers, 04:33: let's have him...
04:41: In this case, let's assume that the yellow ones want to attack Caesare Breve.
04:46: No matter who attacks, we will always count the same guns, because in a direct attack
we count guns and shields. 04:53: In this moment, this warrior inflicts
two damage on this one, minus one shield, so one damage in total.
04:59: And this one inflicts two damage minus two shields, so no damage at all.
05:02: He has two lives and it's not enough for the attack to take place.
05:06: Apart from a normal attack, we also have a thing like raids.
05:08: In raids we look at the cars our soldier has.
05:13: Let's assume that Luigi wants to attack Alexy, because Ceasare can't hurt him on account
of these shields. 05:21: Luigi has to move one space in a straight
line without changing his position, and attack Alexy.
05:27: He deals three damage, 05:31: without any shields, because he doesn't
have any on this side, 05:35: and at the same time Alexy attacks
Caesare, dealing one damage, which isn't enough to kill him.
05:42: Alexy is removed from the board and Luigi moves on his space.
05:51: There are three winning conditions in the game.
05:55: The first one is to take over the most influence in this red district.
06:01: If the yellow player moves here, he has three warriors there while the blue one
has none, 06:06: and the yellow player wins the game.
06:09: The second option is to play a waiting game.
06:13: Let's assume the blue player performs an action here.
06:18: The yellow player may try something here and has to move his track token.
06:25: The blue one drives here and the yellow one is now out of moves.
06:28: He loses the game. 06:30: Apart from that, you can also win by
killing all enemies, which happens very rarely. 06:36: And there is a fourth possibility (I
told you about three, great) - 06:40: we kill the enemy kingpin and, practically,
enter his base. 06:48: Let's assume that Wasylij kills Marco,
moves on his space, here we only have a tile which cannot hurt him,
06:57: Wasylij Ivanon enters the base and kills the opponent's kingpin.
07:05: There's no one home! 07:25: Kingpin is a very cool game.
07:27: I like it really much. 07:30: Some people compare it to Neuroshima
Hex, and it's ok, because Neuroshima is mostly for two players,
07:36: and you have two players here. 07:38: You have tiles on the board there,
you have tiles on the board here. 07:41: But really, no...
07:43: We move a lot more here, we need to pay attention to how the situation changes,
07:46: while in Neuroshima we have to look at the order, the arrangement and stuff.
07:49: Generally, let me say this: 07:51: Samuel isn't very good at Neuroshima
Hex. He always says "come on, help us count", 07:54: but here he can play, ok?
07:57: He loses, of course, but he enjoys playing it.
07:59: If you are in a situation where you play only with one other person,
08:04: and you like games of this type, such as Neuroshima Hex or games which require thinking,
08:08: moving your units or a tactical approach, 08:10: then you have to buy Kingpin, ok?
08:12: The price may be a bit scary, but you have to buy Kingpin.
08:16: If you think "oh no, we're only 16 and we're too young to play it",
08:21: don't believe that, it's ***. Kingpin is for people over 18, but there's
nothing like that in it. 08:25: There's only this one lady... No, there's
nothing bad here, buy it! 08:32: If you're looking for a game for two
people to play between other things, buy it too!
08:36: But if you like games for ten people, then get yourselves Rythme and Boulet and
beat it. 08:44: Kingpin is cool, it's very nicely done,
the pictures are all great, the board is great. 08:50: I hope there will be an expansion.
I wish something would be put in this empty space.
08:54: For example, I would like a fold-out katana for Yakuza, but I have an impression
it won't happen. 09:03: I guess that's all for today,
09:05: but let me just add a riddle. 09:10: What will I be talking about in the
next episode? 09:14: Well, we don't know. A lantern? What
could it be? 09:16: For those who know, congratulations,
for those who don't... well, sorry. 09:22: See you!
