The ASI president position has really given me the opportunity to be a leader in this position
but also gain
skills
and improve skills
that I might not have had the opportunity to do
My name is Laura Gonzalez, I am ASI president this year, and I will be graduating in May with a major in government, and a minor
in women's studies
We impact change on our campus
Many things that are on this campus started because of an idea
that a student leader began
and I think that sometimes we as students sometimes forget that
we have power to change our campus
The administrators here really understand that students are the core of the university
I don't think I've gone a day without talking to an administrator that doesn't say
that
their job is centered around students. So if a student wanted to do something
on campus or change something they have a base here of administrators and staff and
faculty
really wants to help make students
change the University
I am Sarah Couch, I am a double major here at Sacramento state, I am a double major in English and Film
I am also a senior.
Previously in ASI, I have been the Director of Undeclared, the Constituency
of Affairs Secretary, last year at the Vice President of University Affairs, and this
year and the Director of the Office of Governmental Affairs, so I've had a long history here at ASI
It's allowed me to meet with a lot of students from different majors, whether it be
engineering, or nursing
or psychology, or communications, or anything else, or government
These are students who are motivated, students who want to be leaders.
Really coming together and having an idea
and being able to tell a student "hey that is a great idea," we should go ahead and do that
My name is Blake Menezes, and I am the ASI executive Vice President. I'm a graduating senior here at Sacramento State
and I'm going to be graduating with a degree in business with a concentration in international business and marketing
I ran for office because
I had ideas about what I want my campus to look like
and what I wanted student government to look like
Being involved on campus
I thought the best way to make change was through student governement
i think students have misconceptions on who should run,
What qualifies you to run
It might
discourage students from running, but the reality is that anyone can run for office.
You just have to have an issue,
have passion, and be willing to commit a year of time and effort to
make change on campus.
How many people can say that they were on the Board of Directors for an organization that runs
around six point seven billion dollar budget
not many people, at least not many people who are under the age of 23
and being someone who is doing that right now
it's pretty crazy thought all together. I am passionate about ASI
I love ASI and what it does as an organization
and how it fights on behalf of students, but after
several years of working for ASI, and getting to know the students in it and the students at Sac State
I felt I was ready to represent the students and actually be able to
be able to navigate the processes and fight on behalf of students,
for the issues that they were passionate about and as well as I
Right now i have been talking to people community, and I've been beginning to get job offers
internships offers
people knowing that involved at State leader here at Sac State
and they want that, they want someone who has this experience in working with
a ton of people in a collaborative effort in understanding strategic priorities
and how they can work efficiently, and so it's something that's helping me get career right now
when I graduate this upcoming spring
So anyone can really run for office, I would really like more students to run for office, because the more
students we have
the more involvement we have
and we show more the passion of students
and how much Sac State matters to us
so I would like to encourage all students to run for office
But most importantly, passionate student students, and students who really want to make a change on campus. When I
graduated high school, my cousin gave me two words of advice
He gave me this card, and in the card were two handwritten from him. It said,
"Get involved."
That's all he said. And so from that advice, I give you the same advice. Get involved.
Whether it be in ASI, or other places. But I
wholeheartedly encourage you to run for office in ASI. For the experiences that I have
told you about, and for the experiences of so many others
it's an amazing place to be
I hope you get involved!
