Hi guys, Rory here at RMAudio, and welcome
to my first ever tutorial video. if you like this tutorial please share the
video and feel free to comment and discuss anything regarding the content of the tutorial
or audio in general. you can do so on my Facebook page or on twitter. Any requests
for future tutorials are also most welcome! OK so, At the moment I have been working on
a demo video using the rather excellent Boom Library's Gun Construction Kit So I thought Id take you through my basic
approach to getting the two big shotgun blasts shown in the video from the original source
material. Here is my final result mixed to a stereo file.
As you can see in my naming convention, I have named the recordings in terms of how they are used in the overall sound, I find it makes it easier to remember which is which when
it comes down to making small tweaks later on.
once named, I then added the tracks to a group channel where a limiter was applied
So here is what the source material sounds like before any additives just going through
the limiter. To start with I added some distortion, using
D16's plugin Redopter, I found the "little fuzz" preset a good place to start from, as
it had the warmth and presence I was after. I then used Ozone's Exciter starting from
the Tape Saturation Preset and tweaked to suit.
Next I added in the density channels, 9&10 in the kit, I used a compressor to bring up
the tails a bit, paying attention to the attack and release times to try to stop it sounding
too unnatural. I used the tube compressor in Guitar rig however
you favorite compressor will do the job. Some EQ here will help add some more body
and warmth if you feel it needs it. Tracks 1&2 and 9&10 are going to make up the
main character of the sound Adding Tracks 11&12 brings in some diffusion,
This effect is quite subtle but make a real difference.
The tail tracks were added next using a compressor , again, to bring up the tails, paying close
attention to the attack and release times.
the exit ring was added in next, I'm using quite an aggressive shelf EQ on the high end
to bring out the metallic qualities here, so the volume of this track has been dropped
to compensate for the EQ. I have also moved the track back a little in time to separate
it from the other tracks. To simulate the recoil and add some kick to
the sound tracks 3&4 are added, I used EQ to bring up the beef in the sound and a multi
band compressor, waves C4 in this case to control everything in the bottom end. I also
added a small amount from the Dada life sausage fattener in track 4. Less than 10% is easily
enough. I have also moved these track slightly forward in time to simulate the recoil, use
your ears to judge where you think it sounds most satisfying.
Track 8 adds in the hard impact, and I'm using the D16 redopter again to saturate, I'm also
using a transient shaper to bring up the attack and curb the release a little
I used the reload sound from the libraries designed sounds to add in between blasts which
I think helps add some needed action\par I wasn't entirely happy with the bass end,
so I have also added a sub layer using Native Instruments FM8 synth, its set to a basic
sine wave oscillator preset I have created previously for this purpose.
I then added a gate to it on side chain mode, and used the main shotgun sound, channel 1,
to trigger the gate to open. The midi is just a single note at C1 which
plays before the shotgun blasts, the gate suppresses the note until opened by track 1.
I then added the sweeteners to the group channel, some EQ , the sausage fattener again and Ozone's
maximizer. on the group returns I used a reverb with
an expander in front so that only the peak of the sound triggered the reverb.
I then mixed the track to peak around -20 for now and then exported to show you the
final result.
That's it, thanks for watching, and I hope this helps.
