This image illustrates the layout of your bowels and how surgery
will affect their function.
This is the small bowel, known as the ileum.
This is the large bowel, known as the colon.
This is the ***.
There are many different operations that may lead to you needing a colostomy.
There are two main types of colostomies that are commonly formed,
and it very much depends on your specific condition as to which you will need.
Your stoma care nurse will discuss this with you in more detail.
Here in the sigmoid colon is one of the most common positions for either an end
or a loop colostomy.
Another common position is on the transverse colon.
It is more common to see a loop colostomy here.
Here you can see the formation of an end colostomy.
Please remember it may not always be possible for the surgeon to position it here.
Therefore your stoma care nurse will discuss this with you before surgery.
