What we're going to talk about, is how to properly inspect the firefighter's bunker
coat, or turnout coat. One of the first things that we want to do, is carefully go over every
inch of the material, looking for any frays, holes, or weaknesses in the stitching, by
pulling and tugging on those areas. Ultraviolet light from the sun, will damage a firefighters'
turnout gear, so as we pull and tug, that is one of the first signs we find, from ultraviolet
damage, is that that gear will actually tear, under very little pressure of pulling and
tugging. We want to inspect the Velcro, to make sure that that Velcro has not become
contaminated with too much debris, and if it has, it will either need to be thoroughly
cleaned, or completely replaced. Any time a bunker gear is repaired, the type of thread
used, must be approved by NFPA standards. We would also inspect all of the snaps, and
any other hardware, like zippers and clips, that are attached to the gear, for damage,
and for proper working condition. A firefighter's turnout clothing, very simple to inspect.
Should be done at least once a month
