CROSS: There are some things you as a patient can
do to kind of cope with the symptoms. Having a rescue or emergency pack where you keep
a spare set of clothes on you, some wipes, etc., in case you have an accident. So that's
something that often patients will do to cope during a flare.
SCHERL: Running to the bathroom, being tethered sometimes
to the bathroom, is going to cause a lot of stress. And that can be managed by explaining
to people who you think will be receptive and understanding what you're going through.
CUFFARI: As far as diet and nutrition in terms of the
disease itself, there's nothing specifically within the diet that has been associated with
an exacerbation or worsening of symptoms regarding ulcerative colitis.
MARION: It's very much an individual issue. You have
to take it patient by patient.
CUFFARI: My general rule of thumb with patients is
that, if something bothers you, certainly something that you're eating bothers you,
then you should probably avoid that particular food.
