AFTER A DEADLY MENINGITIS
OUTBREAK SPREAD ACROSS SEVERAL
STATES DUE TO A TAINTED BATCH OF
STEROID INJECTIONS, OFFICIALS
SAY THE
FIRST OFFICIAL CASE OF FUNGAL
MENINGITIS HAS HIT OUR AREA.
FOX 10 NEWS REPORTER CORY PIPPIN
BRINGS YOU THE DETAILS.
< Officials across Florida are
now preparing for the
possibility of more cases of
fungal meningitis As of
this past weekend, known cases
in the outbreak reached double
digits with 10 reportsthe
latest
coming from Escambia County. "As
far as fungal meningitis goes,
we're looking at fever, very
severe headaches, stiff neck,
back pain and sometimes nausea
and
vomiting," Officials say the
outbreak stems from a batch of
contaminated steroid injections
from the New England Compounding
Center or NECC, that were
distributed to medical
facilities across the country
"Officials say the 47 year old
victim received his injections
here at the Pain Consultants of
West Florida, 1 of 6 locations
across the state to
receive the contaminated
steroids." The infected
medication may have been used at
the location in spinal and joint
injections numerous times
between July 8 and September
28th of this
year Dr. John Lanza with the
Escambia County Health
Department says they're working
to contact more than 600 people
who received those injections
"We're working with law
enforcement to find those
individuals we haven't been able
to find because
it is so significant of an
illness and they have to know
they're at risk." And with 14
deaths nationwide, 2 of them in
Florida, no one is taking any
chances Reporting in Escambia
County, Cory
Pippin, Fox 10 News.
OFFICIALS WANT TO STRESS THAT
THE ILLNESS IS NOT CONTAGIOUS.
