Hey there everybody, just before start, I thought I'd just show you my cat.
Oh, she's purring! Aw, that is so cute. Such love. Anyway, bye. Um, I finally got around
to making the video that has been easily the most requested thing of me. And something
that I've been promising to do for ages. So, finally got around to it. Anyway...
Here we are. ProTips for Babybats. I'm just going to rattle it off in one great
big list. It's always good to start with an apology, so sorry, but there are things on
here you will like, and some that maybe you will not like.
It's not up to me what you do and don't like. So anyway...
Let's go! Rule 1: the true Goth never admits it.
I heard this years ago and I'm sticking with it. I've said it before and I will keep saying
it, if you're wearing white face makeup, put it past the jaw! Do all your neck, ears, your
chest if you can see it. Exposed skin around your face. Do not use clown white makeup,
or white face paint. It's a real... urgh, it doesn't look good. Invest in a good quality
pale foundation. Crow makeup looks silly on just about everyone.
If you don't like traditional Goth music, at least become familiar with the classic
artists so you don't look like a noob. Joining anything, you really want to learn about it,
especially where it all started! Give the music a go. You might actually like it! If
you want... I can suggest some bands that you should look up, and that I like. Bauhaus,
London After Midnight, The Cruxshadows, Nick Cave, Siouxsie Sioux, Switchblade Symphony,
The Cure, Sisters of Mercy - I love Sisters of Mercy - Voodoo Church, Christian Death,
Specimen, Alien Sex Fiend... there are lots! There are LOTS. Get Googling.
Do not mistake emo music for Goth music. *cough*BlackVeilBrides*cough* Ooo, did I just make a few enemies there?
Mix up textures with your black clothing. Combine cotton with lace, pvc, fur, velvet,
etc. Who needs colour when you have texture? Despite your unyielding urge to do so, don't
put your feelings on the internet. If you've just been dumped or facing unrequited love,
or whatever, you'll be feeling a lot of emotions of course, but it's not a good idea to publicly
post your emotions online. Because that will still be there years from now, and you will
not feel the same. Write in a personal diary instead perhaps. If people are picking on
you for not liking the music they think is cool, they're probably not worth getting to
know anyway. 'Cause that's *** shallow. Goths and emos are ABSOLUTELY NOT THE SAME
THING. Don't wear religious symbols you don't know
the meaning of. And don't wear band Tshirts that you've never
heard. I don't know your family or caregivers, but
don't expect them to be cool with it. Take your "transitioning period" slowly so as not
to terrify your family and those around you. When people shout stupid stuff at you in public,
ignore it. Keep walking. They're just trying to get a reaction out of you. Of course if
someone gives you a compliment, say Thank You. Be nice to everyone! Unfortunately the
public will assume bad things about you, so you do have to make an extra effort to show
what kind of person you are. Get that to come across. Self-mythologising never worked for
anyone. This means pointing out how interesting you are, instead of just... being interesting.
I'm only saying this 'cause I've seen lots of online profiles that do just that pretty
badly. At my modelling lessons, I learnt the importance of the "whole look". Which means...
if you have the clothes, you also need the hair, the makeup, the jewellery, the nails,
the bag, the shoes, the whole look. Like, your clothes can be super fancy, but if you
don't do anything with your hair or makeup, it will just look like you're wearing a costume.
Like you're dressing up as a Goth, not being one. Savvy? That being said, they also said
at modelling, that anyone aged 14, 13, or younger, shouldn't wear makeup at all. It's
not necessary. If you really want to when you are aged 13, 14... keep it very minimal.
There's a line between looking genuine and inauthentic and this is hard to place. What
you want to achieve as far as look go, is that it shouldn't matter what you're wearing...
you will still be unavoidably gothic. Like, when you're in jeans and a shirt, and people
say, "Crazy get up you've got there!". Then you've made it. If you don't want to commit
to dying your hair, try clip in human hair extensions, or buy a quality kanekalon wig
and style it. I used to wear wigs sometimes. Watch online tutorials... there are lots of
makeup tutorials and more on YouTube. You can look at mine even! You can put a cheap
outfit together from op-shops or thrift stores, use your spooky imagination, and just stick
to black. You need don't hundreds of dollars or pounds to look good, stylised outfits can
be expensive! Hot Topic = No. I've never been there, we don't have it here, but I've seen
the website. I understand you can get the occasional cool thing there, but generally
they seem to miss the mark. I understand that older Goths don't want to hang out with Babybats.
Really, I think probably this is more an age thing, rather than elitism. Sadly, the older
you get, the less you want to hang out with young people. I think that's just it. Everyone
has to start somewhere! No one knows everything about the subculture. Take the opportunity
to learn, do research, do homework, you have the internet. It has everything on it. Don't
copy someone else directly, but do let others inspire you. Scroll through Tumblr or Pinterest
for style ideas. Find a style you like, or blend styles together. You might be into Gothic
Lolita, or Elegant Gothic Aristocrat, or a more Traditional style, or Cybergoth, or Neo-Victorian...
or whatever. There are HEAPS of online stores for clothing and accessories. Like just look
at etsy.com . You will die. My favourite brand is Punk Rave. And you should try, if you're
looking for clothes online, some good websites are Kate's Clothing, Gothic Catwalk, Soho's,
*** Angel, Phaze, FanPlusFriend, Attitude Clothing, Lip Service, ReStyle, and my favourite:
eBay! To get more involved in the 'scene', it will really depend on where you live, and
your age. Mostly. If you're over 18 or whatever the legal age is where you are, look for local
club nights and events and go to those. If you're school aged, your best bet in probably
to try finding friends online. You don't have to shave off your eyebrows! But, if you're
blonde, say, and you dye your hair black, at least draw your eyebrows in with a black
eyebrow pencil. Otherwise it looks like you've forgotten them. It's especially a good tip
for boys, who tend to have thicker eyebrows. Study hard and get a good job! How else are
you going to pay for your spooky, haunted mansion and lots of fancy gear?
What others think of you: screw it. Just be yourself. Best advice I can give anyone. Unless
you are a ***, be yourself. Express yourself, that's kinda the... point of the whole thing
really. There are no real rules you need to conform to. Just be you! Just be you. Lovely
lovely you. Well, I guess that's all that I can think of for now. That's all from me.
I hope you've found this helpful. If you've got any more questions for me or anything,
feel free, don't be afraid. I don't mind. Thank you for watching, stay spooky, and I
will see you next time. Bye bye!
