Get excited, because there’s a new Jeep on the way.
The new Jeep, called the JL, was recently spotted in Michigan. It's also fully covered
to hide the body from curious fans like us, so you’re just going to have to deal with this
What we know so far is that the JL come with a Pentastar V-6 and keep the solid front and
rear axles, so it definitely won’t have an independent front suspension that’s been
rumored for quite some time.
Now, speaking of axles, the JL could be getting a new and improved Dana axle with a larger
bolt pattern. You should also expect the Jeep JL to have an eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual
The front-end is noticeably longer than the typical JK, and the expanded front fenders
give it a wider look. In addition to that, the windshield is more angled to it to give
it a better aerodynamic setup. All in all, it maintains the classic Wrangler look,
from what we can tell.
The JL will likely use a “hydroformed steel frame” that will be much lighter and they’re
doing this in order to keep fuel economy standards and safety regulations in line. Jeep claims
that the lighter platform will give it better off-road performance, but we’ll have to
wait and see for ourselves.
We can also confirm that a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine is available.
Finally! A Wrangler with a Diesel in it!
Performance info hasn’t been released yet, but if it’s anything like the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel,
hold onto your hats. The lighter Jeep JL should be able to tear it up while also getting over
30 miles-per-gallon.
Now in case you forgot, Jeep announced earlier this year that a new Wrangler based pickup
is in development and shouldn’t be too far away. While we’re still waiting for more
details on that, we’re hoping that we’re hoping that the same EcoDiesel engine will
be offered on it too.
