My name is Joe Lipsett. I am the Deputy Director of Academic Development at the University of Newcastle.
I came along to the workshop today so that I could learn how best to support
the academics from my institution who are considering applying for the fellowship. One
of the big things that we want to be able to do is provide them both the guidelines
support but also advise them on the content, so advise them whether or not they're really
meeting those regulations.
My understanding of the fellowship was that
it's a very big deal, a lot of prestige is associated with it but that it's also very
difficult to obtain. So coming into this I was looking to seek more information about
the kinds of individuals that could possibly become fellows as well as have a better understanding
of just the previous work that had been done.
What I've gained from the experience, I mean
it's always fantastic to make connections with other individuals from institutions both
in the support as well as the academic areas, but I think I have a greater capacity to help
people put together these applications, not only because I've got a better understanding
of what's actually being looked for but there were some really useful tips in each of the
different sessions that could help to guide or inform what not to do as well as what to
focus on. What I'm going to do next is I think put down
some very strict timelines with the individuals who are considering applying because the deadline
is relatively short. So I think if they're really interested in continuing with this
process they need to be very diligent so I'm going to see if I can get them together, see
if they can collaborate with each other to support each other through the process, but
mostly just keep them on track and keep it in the back of their minds.
