In a coastal area, I find that the products that are used have to be saltwater friendly.
Aluminums don’t work on the beach; all of the fastenings that we used are stainless
steel. Andersen has historically used little or no metals on their exterior products and
it’s what attracted me to Andersen in the first place, which would’ve been almost
25 years ago.
Being a mariner, knowing how severe the saltwater is to any sort of metal, whether it’s steel,
aluminum, we use very durable products outside, the siding, the decking, they all have to
stand the test of time, which happens very quickly on the beach.
Just down the beach a little ways, I built a house, side-by-side, with one of my competitors,
who used a very expensive upper-end window. Before I finished my house, the other company
was out there painting the windows before the people had even moved in because the aluminum
had pitted and the dark finish that they put on the sashes of these windows had already
deteriorated before the owners had moved in. And I can promise you that if I go to that
job today, those windows have pitted again.
Water intrusion is probably our biggest enemy here in the southeast. We get a lot of rain,
a lot of humidity, which creates an environment for rot and it normally comes in through the
windows and through the doors and Andersen just does the job.
I had decided a long time ago that I was going to use the best products. I have been an Andersen
guy for 25 years and it’s always been the right decision for me.
