Lucie: Hey everyone and welcome back to Learn More, See More, B'More! After spending an entire semester in London and visiting tons of art museums throughout Europe,
I've grown so much more appreciative of Baltimore's art scene. Noah: We're here on the steps of the Baltimore Museum of Art.
In addition to offering free admission, it's on the Homewood campus. And it's not just a museum for the Baltimore community
it's also an outstanding resource for Hopkins students as well. Lucie: Today, we'll be exploring both the world-famous and the local favorites of Baltimore's art scene.
Noah: It'll be a great experience for us, considering that my only experience with art was failing Early Renaissance Art during my freshman spring.
Lucie: And my only experience was this snapchat that I sent to my friends.
Noah: You ready to see the sculpture garden? Lucie: Yeah, let's go!
Lucie: Hopkins is an amazing university and Homewood is a beautiful campus.
Noah: But, what many students don't know is how much the city has to offer.
Lucie: I'm Lucie... Noah: and I'm Noah. Lucie: We're students at the Johns Hopkins University
in Baltimore, MD. Noah: And we're here to help you Lucie: Learn More,
Both: See More, B'More!
Lucie: He loves me, he loves me not! Lucie: Have you guys been to the BMA before?
JHU Student: Yes. Lucie: What's your favorite part about it?
JHU Student: I love the courtyard. The exhibits are phenomenal. Lucie: Have you guys been to the BMA?
JHU Student #2: Yes. We're actually thinking about going right later today. Lucie: Oh really? That'd be awesome.
Lucie: I took art history. I really liked the class and the professor was so nice. We came on a field trip here. Well it wasn't really a field trip.
Noah: It's right here. Lucie: I mean, it wasn't a real trip. Noah: It's across the street.
Lucie: We took a walking tour here.
Lucie: The BMA has the largest Matisse collection in the entire country.
Also, the modern and contemporary collections were recently renovated. I know tons of Hopkins students that have worked or interned here.
And some of the classes from Hopkins's Museums and Society minor are centered around the BMA, be it curating a show of prints or just working with conservation.
Noah: The Walters Art Museum has free admission and it's just a short drive from the Homewood campus.
In fact, it's actually next to Peabody Institute which is the Johns Hopkins School of Music.
Lucie: I've been to the Walters Art Museum so many times, mostly for class, but also just with my friends for fun sometimes.
The inside is absolutely beautiful and is a must-see for anyone interested in art.
Both: The art. Lucie: It's so pretty. They were also really nice. Noah: They were.
Lucie: Smiley face!
Noah: The collections at AVAM are nontraditional, experimental, and really, really cool.
Trust me, I'm a neuroscience major and trust me, AVAM will blow your mind. Lucie: Speaking of non-arts majors, some Hopkins engineers
even participate in the AVAM's Kinetic Sculpture Race.
Lucie: The artwork here is contributed by untrained artists. So, it's really unique- they're not following any sort of formal pattern. You won't see this artwork anywhere else.
Noah: This is the American Visual Arts Museum. Lucie: Visionary. Noah: This is the American Visionary Art Museum.
Lucie: I like this one.
Lucie: Baltimore street art.
Noah: We're here in the Leek Student Art Studio that all undergrads can use anytime they need to paint and various visual art activities.
We're back on campus now. And we're here with our friend Elyse, who's willing to talk to us a little about her experience at the BMA.
Elyse: As a Museums & Society Minor, we actually get into the museums a lot. At least a few of my classes have had lectures in the Baltimore Museum of Art.
That was super fun! Baltimore's definitely got a lot of quirky art stuff going on. Noah: Thanks for joining us today as we explore the visual arts scene
in Baltimore. Hope you had a great time and I hope that when you come to Baltimore to visit Hopkins, you'll get to check it out for yourself!
Lucie: And now we're going to make some art of our own! So, join us next time to Learn More, Noah: See More,
Both: B'More! Lucie: Here goes!
Noah: Lucie, don't make me come up there! Lucie: No! Aaah!
