And back here in Korea....where new film footage of Korean independence fighter Ahn Jung-geun
may have emerged. In 1909, Ahn assassinated Hirobumi Ito, who
served as the prime minister of Japan four times before becoming resident-general of
Korea. A New York Times article from August 14th,
1910, recounts the details of the incident, and says that two films of the assassination
were brought to America. It said the films were shown at Ahn's trial
and later confiscated by the Japanese government. Tokyo's public broadcaster NHK did show three
scenes from the footage, but excluded key moments that may shed fresh light on the famous
Korean patriot. Korean groups that commemorate the legacy
of Ahn say they welcomed the news and said they would continue efforts to find the historic
footage.
