This tutorial will explain how to use the short title catalog to locate codex manuscripts.
From the Special Collections website,
click Early Manuscripts.
Select the codex manuscript
short title catalog.
The short title catalog provides a way to limit searches directly to codex manuscripts
housed in Special Collections.
This catalog is useful if you want to browse manuscripts in a specific language
or from a specific date range.
At the University of Chicago Library,
codex manuscripts include the ancient, medieval, Renaissance, and early modern
periods through 1700.
You can conduct a keyword search or browse by category.
We will first demonstrate the keyword search.
Here we are using book of hours as keywords.
In this instance, we receive ten results. The records are minimal and include manuscript
number, title, date,
and language or place of origin.
Please note that you cannot request manuscripts directly from
the short title catalog,
but you can request them through the online catalog.
Once you have located the manuscript you wish to view,
go to the catalog and enter the manuscript number in the search box
and select call number from the drop-down menu.
Open the record
and request the item
from the Request from SCRC link
in the bottom right hand corner.
You can also browse the short title catalog.
Click the browse category that best meets your needs.
If you're interested in a specific date range select Date Browse.
We are now looking at manuscripts from the Tenth Century.
You can also browse by language.
Once you find the manuscript that you'd like to view,
repeat the same steps as earlier.
Enter the manuscript number into the catalog
and select call number from the drop-down menu.
Open the record
and request using the Request from SCRC link.
Once your request is complete you can view the manuscript on-site in
Special Collections.
