Are there any common complications following breast enlargement surgery? Well, interestingly,
breast enlargement is one of the safest operations, because patients are generally very fit and
healthy. It's a relatively quick procedure, and anaesthetics have advanced a lot in the
last 10 to 20 years. So overall, it is really, really safe.
However, it is a surgical procedure, you need to bear that in mind, and complications can
occur. Probably the most common one, really, is that you don't get the result that you
wish for. That's why at Aurora we spend so much time focusing on trying implants, trying
to work out the look you want. You bring in photographs of what you don't like and do
like, and you also try implants on under various different outfits, different clothing to get
the best idea of what's going to look best for you.
Rare complications include bleeding and infection. Now bleeding occurs in about 1 in 200 patients.
We haven't had a significant case at Aurora for the last 2 years. If a blood vessel does
open up straight after operation, you may need to have an operation to remove to blood
clot, but again that's very, very rare. Infection is rare, but does effect approximately 1 in
200 patients, and of these, 50% need to have their implant removed because the body can't
really fight an infection around an implant and 50% will recover with antibiotics.
So fortunately, complications are rare, they can happen. And if you'd like to know more
about them, please ask us for our free information CD on breast enlargement surgery, which discusses
these possible complications in great length.
