[male voice-over]. EIU students are trying to
shake off academic uncertainties.
[unclear audio] after college is high.
But more undergraduates choose internships in search
of radical ways to connect with their inner selves
to find out what's really going on in their minds.
Each week we follow psychology interns as
they go undercover to off-campus locations where
they will discover the truth about their level of passion
for their chosen field.
The Psychology Department's internship program provides
students with an opportunity to experience and apply many
of the skills that they learn in our curriculum.
Well, it's helping me know what it's really like for somebody
to live with a mental illness as well as become more
compassionate and patient with that type of population.
And working with it and through doing it, I decided
to do social work with a concentration in mental health
because I like working with that population so much.
We believe that doing an internship is probably
one of the most important things if not the most
important thing a student can do to enhance what
they've learned in the classroom.
During my internship I was primarily a case manager for
troubled adolescent boys.
I discovered I do not want to work with teenage boys.
I'm really glad that I had the experience, because I learned
a lot about myself.
I've had a number of interns who've come through our program
and decided this is it, this is what I want to do forever,
and they just fall in love with the work, they fall in love
with the clients, and they're really happy with it.
I've learned that I have a lot more confidence than I thought
I did, and it's also taught me that school counseling
is another option for graduate school.
You can do more than you think you can.
