So even though the goal of the butterfly is to get your hands together and have both of
the poi in a completely flat plane, you'll notice if you watch me doing it to the side,
that in actuality one poi is crossing slightly ahead of the other and they're not in perfect
planes. This is the only way you can do it without having them completely hit each other
as they are crossing. So it's ok to pick one hand that's going to be slightly in front
of the other hand. And allow the poi to not get tangled when they cross by having one
go in front of the other. Another way that helps to get the feeling of the butterfly
again is to emphasize the down swing. This movement in some ways is like a butterfly's
wings flapping and there's a definite rhythm to it. So don't be afraid to experiment with
it until you can find the right combination of holding your hands in a way that works
for you. And if they hit each other it's ok, just keep on going. Also notice that when
I'm doing the butterfly in this direction my palms are facing each other, and slightly
tilted up towards the ceiling.
