At a loss as to what you could do for your fibro fog?
Stay tuned to pick up 10 effective tips
before sharing those 10 fibro fog tips, let me share a quick story about my shortest bus
ride ever. Maybe you can relate.
Ok - you have to get a visual here. I planned on taking the car to work one day
as I needed to pick up a few things at the grocery store afterwards.
Unfortunately, when I arrived at work there were no parking spots available out front.
So, I decided to park across the street at the grocery store thinking that I would just
walk over after work and have my car waiting there when I finished.
No lugging heavy bags back across the street - convenient right?
After a long stressful day at work feeling a little zoned out, I walked over in "zombie
mode" to the store to do my shopping. Exiting the store with my groceries in hand
and my thoughts out in la-la land, I immediately headed over to the bus stop.
When my bus arrived, I got on and fished around in my pockets for a bus ticket while juggling
my shopping bags and daypack. At that point I was thinking - Boy! I wished
I'd taken my car to work that day. Hold on! Hadn't you taken the car that day?
Yeh - Yeh - I'm getting to that part. Give me a second - OK?
Sorry - Go ahead with your story. Thanks. As I was saying, just as the bus pulled
away from the curb, I glanced out the window over at the parking lot and spotted a car
that looked just like mine with the same color and sport rack.
Hey! Wait a minute it was mine. I yelled:
"Oh my gosh! Stop the bus! Stop the bus!" as I stepped into the stairwell at the front
exit of the bus. The driver had driven about 40 feet before
stopping at a traffic light, wondering what the heck was going on.
When he opened the doors and I scurried off the bus, looked over my shoulder and asked
if there was a charge. He chuckled and waved me on, seeing that I
was totally out of it. He must have thought I was absolutely crazy
along with everyone else on the bus. I ran across the intersection, hopped into
my car and burst out laughing! My fibro fog had gotten the better of me that
day. On the more serious note, fibro fog can dramatically
affect our quality of life. Cognitive dysfunction is not a laughing matter.
It's one of the most common complaints of people who have fibromyalgia.
Sometimes fibro fog is more of a disability than our physical symptoms.
So, is there anything we can do to improve our cognitive functioning?
Here are 10 tips to help clear some of your fibro fog away:
Try some deep breathing exercises. Part of cognitive functioning problems is
that we are not getting enough oxygen to our brains.
Eat some "brain friendly" foods like fish, which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
These healthy fats have been linked to slowing mental decline and may play a vital role in
enhancing memory. Improve your sleep.
Keeping healthy sleep habits helps you rest better and be mentally alert in the morning.
Establish healthy habits and routines to reduce fibro fog.
By doing the same thing in predictable ways your life will become easier.
Write important tasks down. Avoid trusting your memory alone.
Making notes helps you get your thoughts more firmly in your mind.
Keep your mind busy by doing word puzzles and number games.
These activities require strategic thinking, help flex your brain and get the blood moving.
Get out for a walk, hike or cycle. Moderate physical activity helps re-establish
the natural neurochemical balance of the body. Check your medications.
Sometimes confusion can be a side effect of some medications.
Speak with your health care provider to see if adjusting the dosage or changing to others
that are less likely to have this effect makes sense.
Organize and de-clutter. If you find your physical environment overwhelming,
organizing your house and removing clutter can be yet another way to control fibro fog.
Find ways to help you focus better. Try breaking your tasks up into small steps.
Don't take on more than you can comfortably manage, so you're not trying to do too much
at once. Like other fibromyalgia symptoms, fibro fog
can be best addressed by using a combination of strategies and by developing new habits
with supportive routines. Remember our brains can only hold one thought
at a time let it be a positive one. Wanting to learn more about those things that
