Today, January 29, eminent Russian writer and dramatist Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was
born in Taganrog, Russia in 1860. Considered a founder of the modern short story, he wrote
hundreds of works, including “The Student” and “The Steppe,” which is widely lauded
as one of the greatest achievements of short fiction. “The Seagull,” “Three Sisters,”
and “The Cherry Orchard” are among Mr. Checkov’s outstanding plays. The acclaimed
author’s realist style had a profound influence on writing both in and outside of Russia.
