Lori Vedder: Well, the information on the FASFA is very specific. It will ask for demographic
information on the individual student. And if required, it will also request parental
information on behalf of that student. So they would need to bring with them there tax
returns, federal tax return, W-2s, proof of any other types of untaxed income or resources
being received by that family. The FASFA can be filed as soon after January 1st of the
student's senior year. So students filing for 2009-10 would begin filing the FASFA now
and that would take effect for the following fall at the University of Michigan-Flint.
The different types of financial aid that are offered are grants, scholarships, work-study
programs which are opportunites to work on campus or in some non-profit agencies off-campus.
as well as the various loan programs. What happens is the U.S. Department of Education
receives the FASFA. They run it through a process and then each institution that the
student has listed on the FASFA is able to draw in that information electronically. Here
at the University of Michigan-Flint, once we receive that FASFA information, we will
notify our students who are admitted within 72 hours of receipt of their FASFA information.
Here at the University of Michigan-Flint, we do have a preferred filing deadline of
March 1st and that way we begin notification for the following fall mid to late March and
that's approximately when students will begin to hear. Um, any financial aid office can
be contacted with questions as well as the U.S. Department of Education has a 1-800 number
that would be available on the FASFA itself or while doing this online that could reach
and ask questions to.
