Welcome to another week of Ask Away Wednesday. Many of you have come on our page and posted
about your experience with academic advising, so we thought we would share with you one
of the resources NIU has for Academic Advising. The Academic Advising Center. So we talked
to Michelle picket, the director of the center. Students should come to the academic advising
center so they can have a trained advisor assist you in choosing proper courses and
classes to declare a major. The academic advising center works with students who are undeclared,
so they have not yet chosen a major. We also work with students who are looking to choose
a different or alternate major if they have a declared program. By coming here, you will
have someone to figure out your academic, as well as your career goals. By working alone
and not using an academic advisor, students run the risk of not completing the academic
requirements that they need to graduate from NIU. What’s important for students to understand
is that different academic majors have different requirements – so some may require them
to declare their major sooner than others. We do provide regular advising appointments
to help students select their courses. We also provide major exploration appointments
to help students understand the majors that are available at NIU. We do sponsor the exploring
majors fair, which is a campus-wide event to help students understand the majors and
programs at NIU. The exploring majors fair is on Monday, September 24th and it’s going
to be in the Holme’s Student Center – Duke Ellington Ballroom from 11am-3pm. During the
exploring majors fair, students can meet with advisors across campus to learn about different
majors, minors, and other academic opportunities available at NIU. It’s really important
that students come and see us as early as possible in their academic career. So that
can be in the first few weeks of classes, or it can be the first month of two of classes,
but it’s very important for students to come see their advisor as soon as possible.
The Academic Advising center is located between the parking garage and the Founders Memorial
Library. We’re open Monday-Friday from 8am-4:30 pm. Students can call our main offices to
schedule an appointment and they would just dial 815-753-2573. The advising center’s
website is www.aac.niu.edu. Remember that the Academic Advising Center is for those
of you who have not declared a major or those of you who are looking for other academic
opportunities. Thanks for tuning in and don’t forget to ask away on our Facebook page!
