COMM: The inside of the once mighty Ark Royal
lyes open in the hot Mediterranean sun. The formal flag ship of the Royal Navy is currently
being scrapped to make everything from bridge foundations to tin cans. About 80 workmen
are cutting apart the 22,000 ton vessel, near the port city of Izmir, west Turkey. It has
been a month since since the light aircraft carrier arrived, after traveling 2,000 miles
from Portsmouth. A handful of Brits have since visited the shipyard, and one woman even asked
for a strip of the vessel to be shipped back to England, however, other tourists trying
to get a last glimpse of the famous warship should book soon. Ship recycling business,
Leyal, expect the project to be complete within the next 7 months.
