Sometimes it's convenient to read an
email message without having it open
and take up the entire screen. People who are used to using Outlook or
Lotus Notes are familiar with the preview pane
well the similar feature exists in Gmail
except it's called split pane mode. The way you turn it on
is if you look up here. In the top navigation bar
there's a button here that allows you to toggle split pane mode
if by some chance you don't see this split pane mode button
in the menu bar, its actually controlled by a Lab
so if you go into settings and you go into Labs
just scroll down and make sure that the preview pane lab is enabled
in this environment it's enabled by default so you don't have to worry about it
but if you're ever in an environment and you don't see that button
go into the lab, turn it on, and it will appear
right here. If you click the down arrow
to give the three options. No split is off.
vertical split makes a vertical line and puts your
inbox on the left and if you click on a message it gives you the message text on
the right
and if you want
to you try and more traditional look if you used to Outlook try horizontal split
and horizontal split will put the mailbox on the top
and the messages on the bottom. You'll notice, if you have conversation view on in this case I
do
and I have eight messages including here. If you click that
it will actually show you the entire thread
of conversation. So the originals here, here's the ones in the middle
and then the newest message is completely visible at the bottom. So
it's just the exact same view as if you were to click
on this message without the preview pane on but it's just in a smaller space
so play around with it. Turn it on and off
and get the inbox to look exactly how you like it. Thanks!
