Seeing young people come through and getting the quality of education that they're getting
today, and the product that we're getting out of this school is better than the products
we're getting in a lot of other schools in the country. We're partly funded through the
Mississippi Department of Education and we're a United Way agency, but it takes a considerable
amount of private funding to compliment the state funding to make all of this work. And
so the capital campaign has as one of its major goals to develop an endowment. We know
that we must look to the future, we're 50 years old, we'll always need dollars for current
use projects and needs but we also need to be looking to the future. I think, you know,
the point of moving to a really impressive new facility is to significantly raise the
profile of the school. You know, we want to be considered one of the best mass communication
programs in the country and I think this facility will allow us to do that. The more that we
get our name out there that people know this is a great place to go to school and then
we have a great reputation. The value of a diploma from Southern Miss in Mass Communication
and Journalism is going to increase. The new location of the Moffitt Health Center, the
new student health service is a great location. It's going to be located on 4th street in
the first floor of Century Park south Building A residence hall, which is a unique concept
because we'll be in the center of about fifteen hundred freshmen. Private support will assure
that students have all of the technology and equipment that this facility needs. So we'll
have the latest technology in terms of x-ray and lab services. The important thing is to
help students pursue their dreams and to maintain a healthier lifestyle throughout their life,
and that's where we feel like our role is. Helping them stay in school to get that degree
so they can pursue their dream and hopefully be a little healthier too. We have outgrown
the building that we now have through the increasing enrollment in our programs and
through the different strategies that we use in teaching that now involve a lot of technology.
It's going to be a beautiful building, it's going to be a wonderful addition to the university
and it's going to achieve our student learning outcomes and our faculty outcomes and provide
even better quality programs. I think if you think about what campus looks like, that is
the first impression that any student is ever going to have when they come to Southern Miss.
I think not only for perspective students coming onto campus as the really important
for them to walk and say yeah this is really a place that I would love to call my home,
but for current students I think that they look and they really do take pride in what
our university has to offer in the aspect of how pretty it is. I think that when you
present a challenge to people to really pick something that they love which is this campus
and Southern Miss as a whole and say hey we're providing you this opportunity to really make
it better, there's no doubt in my mind that we can get it back to looking like it was
if not even better than before.
