We used to consider ourselves above those Arabs who worshipped idols.
We used to say: we have a book to read,
and prophets whose legacy we cherished.
Now they say to us that they have a book being revealed by God,
just like the Torah was revealed to Moses,
but this book is the final one that puts a seal to all divine messages.
It is for all mankind.
They also claim to have a prophet who is Moses' brother.
He receives the archangel who addressed Moses,
but he is the last in the line of prophethood,
and his message is for all mankind.
Huyay, be fair.
He is closer to the truth,
and he observes God's standards with regard to our religion and our book.
The man has treated us fairly
when he placed us at the same footing with the Muslims
and the people of Yathrib in that treaty.
We all have the same rights and obligations.
Whoever treats you as himself is not unfair.
It is unfair that the Jews should be equal to those Gentiles.
We are God's people.
I am not asking you to raise doubts about your religion.
You know that I am one of your top scholars,
well informed of your holy book
and I judge in disputes on its basis.
However, you apparently accepted the treaty and endorsed it.
It is against religion to give a pledge and then violate it.
This applies to pledges between Jews.
As for the Gentiles, no pledge to them is binding.
We only accept it nominally in order to protect our lives, families and property.
We discard it once we can do so.
They are the same as animals.
When they are in a rage, we try to pacify them, then we tie them down.
I cannot understand religion in this way.

This call. I saw the same in a dream.
I am hastening now to report it to the Prophet,
but then I heard Bilal making the call.
Abdullah Ibn Zaid Al-Ansari saw the same dream
and he reported it to the Prophet
who said that it is a true dream.
He taught it to Bilal so that he could make the call.
All praise is due to God for guiding us to this.
We could have no guidance except as He wills.
All praise is due to Him for having cleared the way for us in this matter.
We need no horn, bell or fire to announce prayer times.
Go on and relate your dream to the Prophet.
You are well supported, Umar.
By God, it is not the Makkah we have always known.
Are you referring to the departure of Muhammad and his companions?
And the loss of your father and mine.
May grass grow at their graves.
I am not sure whether it was good or bad for them to die
before this matter has been settled.
They died and left us this legacy of hostility.
We used to leave matters to them to decide, as we could not determine our best course.
Now we must make our decisions
when matters have become more complex and confusing.
Look at me. I am still against Muhammad, following my people's religion.
Why do I feel sad because a section of our people have left us
and moved to Yathrib?
Don't you feel as though you have lost a part of your own self?
Don't you feel something is missing in your life,
just like a traveller misses his own family?
How will it be, then, if we were to fight our own people
as well as the people of Yathrib?
If we win, and I certainly don't like to be defeated,
how can I be delighted if one part of me defeats another part?
If we were to lose, I will then enjoy neither food nor drink.
What sort of enmity is this in which victory gives you no pleasure
and defeat remains unacceptable?
Aub Sulaiman, I still hold on to my old view.
The proof of the pudding is in the eating.
If Muhammad is truly acting as God has commanded him,
then we cannot harm him.
His religion will be triumphant and that will be the proof of his argument.
Otherwise, we will defeat him
and follow our forefathers, regretting nothing.
As if you are saying that if Muhammad is right,
he will be safe from you,
but if he is false, you are safe from him.
You have certainly formulated a view that gives you peace of mind.
O' people of the Muhajireen and the Ansar, all to arms!
A caravan sent by Quraysh is drawing near, coming back from Syria.
It includes your property,
which they had unfairly taken when you emigrated from Makkah.
The Prophet is urging you to intercept it.
May God make it a gain for you.
Quick to arms, you Muslims. To arms.
Join God's Messenger at Buyoot Al-Suqya.
These people are deluded by their religion.
They think that Quraysh will cowardly submit or give up its property.
I can see them all killed.
Let us hope so.
Then Quraysh would have accomplished what we cannot achieve on our own.
This man's magic will thus be foiled
and we go back to our old situation.
A tragedy! A disaster!
People of Quraysh, help!

Your property with Abu Sufyan
is being intercepted by Muhammad and his companions.
I doubt whether you can save the caravan. Help! Help!
You have heard the warning and the call to arms.
Were you to slacken, you will lose your property
as also the respect with which the Arabs hold you.
Everyone should make sure to get ready for war before the night sets in.
Anyone who is unable to go must send someone in his place.
People of Quraysh, a disaster!
Your property with Abu Sufyan
is being intercepted by Muhammad and his companions.
Have you reckoned what these noises are about?
- It sounds a call to arms. - A call to arms!
- Father, who is the enemy? - Your friend.
God's Messenger?
He left us no choice.
He is intercepting our caravan, led by Abu Sufyan.
How about you? Are you going with them?
Have you ever known your father to be a coward?
All power operates by God's will.
Repeat it as you wish.
It could not save you from this chain.
I fear for you, that you may kill someone or be killed.
If you kill a Muslim, you will bear that sin,
and if you are killed, having rejected Islam, you will be in hell.
Move quicker, you lazy limbs.
- You seem all ready to go. - Indeed.
It is better for the Makhzoom clan to seek glory in all ways.
Both myself and Ikrimah will go with our people to stop Muhammad.
You better stay in Makkah to defend it against the clan of Bakr Ibn Kinanah.
As you know, there is vengeance killing between us.
We were expecting their attack, but then we received this news.
If Makkah were to be left without adequate defence,
they may attack the city from the rear.
How about Al-Waleed?
I have given instructions to the servant to look after you until I come back.
What if you do not come back?
Do you bid farewell to your father with such foul words?
Could you imagine that we will pray for your victory
against our Prophet and God's Messenger?
I pray for victory for the Prophet
and for you to follow divine guidance and ensure your safety.
Father!
You still remember that I am your father?
I have never felt the power of blood relation until I have seen you now ready for fighting.
- Untie me, father! - Why should I?
So that I go with you and fight.
Do you think you can deceive your father, Abdullah?
Have you ever known me to be a cheat?
Had I wished to deceive, I could have spared myself this.
Will you fight Muhammad with us when you follow his faith?
I know now that had it all been true and had God been with me,
I wouldn't have been in chains for all this time.
When I saw you now ready to leave,
something has stirred in my heart.
Now I want to defend my father and honour my obligations towards him.
All power operates only with God's will.
You've heard what your brother has said. How about you?
I say: all power operates only with God's will.
Confound you. Won't you do like him?
It is he who spoilt you in the past and he is now coming back to his senses.
I followed him when I learnt the truth from him.
Now he reverts back to falsehood on his own. How bad!
Abu Ali, I don't see getting prepared?
You may realize that I have become fat and heavy.
My fighting contribution is negligible.
Do you feel cowardly, Abu Ali? Have you lost your confidence?
Have a good smell, Abu Ali! Just like women!
You'll see who is the man!
By God, that son of a wicked woman has killed me.
Go and tell Abdullah to make haste.
We don't want to be late for our people. They are all ready.
Wouldn't he give in?
I've tried my best, but he is very stubborn.
And I always thought you to be the more resolute.
Every day brings us something new.
Abdullah comes back to his father, while Abu Jandal remains steadfast.
I wonder whether I should be happy for seeing him resolute,
or should I be angry to see him so obstinate.
Move on to protect your land.
Strike with your sharp swords.
Death is preferable to humiliation.
Shed blood;
protect your land and spare yourselves disgrace.
Return safely, Utbah Ibn Rabeeah;
Come back safely, Al-Waleed Ibn Utbah;
Return safely, Shaibah Ibn Rabeeah.
Easy, people of Quraysh. I bring news from Abu Sufyan.
What news do you bring?
I am a messenger from Abu Sufyan to you.
He wants you to know that your trade caravan is safe, as are all its men.
You have only set out to protect your trade and property.
You can go back now.
You've heard what the man says.
If your caravan is safe this time,
are you sure it will be safe the next time?
Or will you stop trading with Syria from now on?
By God, we will not go back, but we shall march on to Badr
where we shall stay for three days to celebrate.
We shall slaughter camels for food,
feed whoever cares to come to us,
drink wine in abundance and be entertained by singers and dancers.
The whole of Arabia shall hear about us
and hold us in awe for the rest of time.
Let's go on.
The Badr Area 2nd Year After Hijra
Quraysh has brought its dearest sons.
We have only come out chasing the caravan,
and we had no idea that we will be fighting a war.
Had we known, we would have been joined by others who stayed behind.
They have beaten us to the wells of Badr, placing the wells behind them.
If this matter is delayed, we will suffer from thirst.
Why should it be delayed?
Tomorrow; tomorrow.
Lord! Let those who sever relations of kinship be destroyed.
Would someone go round and estimate their numbers?
Abdullah Ibn Suhail! Your son, Abu Yazeed!
What about him?
He has run away to Muhammad's companions.
I don't think he can be caught.
Haven't you heard, Abu Yazeed?
What do you want me to do now after the event?
By God, no one catches up with my son when he is on his horse.
By God, your son has deceived you.
He only came out with you having intended to do what he did.
Could I have opened his heart to find out?
I should have known that my son Abdullah is most resolute,
even though his resolve is in matters that I dislike.
Your son, Abu Yazeed, is now there, where my son is.
What do we gain to set our sons against our other sons?
We will only be like one who cuts his own nose.
Abdullah?
- Abdullah? - What a good man!
All praise be to God who has saved you from them,
having willed to place you with God's Messenger in his first military encounter.
What happened to your brother, Abu Jandal?
Go away. I don't want to see you.
After all we have been through together in this place?
This is now all yours.
Isn't it better than having it shared between two people?
I am now the free one, while you...
You disappoint me, Abdullah!
Is that what you think of me, brother?
I don't want to miss out on fighting alongside the Prophet
in his first battle against these idolaters.
So you will be joining these people until you are near the Muslims.
You will then make your run to join them. Is that so?
Will you fight your father?
I will fight the idolaters.
Now, how about you, Abu Jandal: will you do like me?
What will I do if I encounter my father during the battle,
or if I see him killing my brothers,
or if I see one of my brothers aiming to kill him?
I cannot bear any of this. Abdullah,
I better persevere in this situation
until God provides a way out for me.
Huh! Tell us what you have seen.
They are 300 men, give or take a few.
I could not see any reserve force or further enforcements behind them.
But, people of Quraysh, I can see a catastrophe engulfing us all,
and I can see much killing.
They simply have no protection apart from their swords.
I think that we will not kill any one of them without him killing one of us first.
Should they be able to kill their number from our side,
life would not be worth living.
- You make your own decision. - You, son of a dirty woman!
Do you want to undermine our morale?
He only reported what he saw.
Do you blame him for his accuracy?
He did not see with the eye in his head,
but with the eye of his cowardice.
I am no coward. You will see tomorrow what I do.
People of Quraysh,
by God you will achieve nothing by fighting Muhammad and his companions.
If we win, many of us will look around and see someone whom he hates to see,
because he sees in him the killer of his brother, cousin or clansman.
Go back and put all the blame on me.
Leave Muhammad to the other Arabs.
If they kill him, they will have done the job for you.
Otherwise, he will appreciate your favour of not fighting him.
By God we will not return until God has judged between us and Muhammad.
It is not as Utbah has said.
It is only because his son is with Muhammad
and he fears that you will kill him when war breaks out.
Hence, his chest has swelled, prompting him to say what he said,
scaring people before the fight with Muhammad.
Are you saying this to me, Abu Al-Hakam?
You, son of a dirty woman...
you shall know whose chest has swelled: mine or yours.
Such is Abu Al-Hakam.
He is one of you, the Makhzoom clan.
Indeed he is your chief after your father, Al-Waleed, had died.
I am not proud of him.
What made you join the army with your son, Umair?
What do you mean? I have come for the same purpose as you.
As for me, it may be said that we have our trade with Abu Sufyan
and we have come out to protect our property.
For my part, I am only a poor man.
Without the help I receive from my cousin, Safwan Ibn Umayyah,
my family would go hungry.
I am only one of my people.
And so are Muhammad and those who immigrated with him.
They have deserted my people.
Or you should say that your people have driven them out.
Now they are bringing you along with them to protect their property,
none of which is yours.
Messenger of God! Not so hard with your appeal to Your Lord.
He will surely grant you what He has promised you.
Lord! Let those who sever relations of kinship
and invent falsehood be destroyed today.
As God's Messenger has ordered, our slogan today is:

Alas for my father!
He advises his people against fighting and tells them to go back,
then he is the first to challenge in a duel,
bringing with him my uncle and my brother!

Umayyah Ibn Khalaf, the most stubborn unbeliever. May I perish if I let him live.
