When things are designed by artists, rather than engineers, durability
is often neglected for the sake of looks. Exactly like this sofa leg which
is under constant strain, which will eventually break it. Remove the leg
completely to see that designers neither know anything about material strength:
the leg is hollow, lacks any stiffening ribs and is made of some soft alloy, instead of proper steel.
Well, now you know what to keep in mind
while ordering a new sofa. But we have to sit on something waiting for the
new furniture to arrive.
Get a brick of wood.
Put the broken sofa leg against it and mark the height.
Now draw a line around the brick.
While cutting, make sure the saw passes all the marked lines, to make the surface flat.
You may paint the resulting cut-off brick,
or cover it in color tape to match the sofa.
So we got a piece of wood of approximately the same height as the original leg.
Put it under the sofa corner.
Don't remove the remains of the metal leg -
let them stick into the wood and fix the brick in place.
Our new leg has a much wider footprint, which lessens the pressure on the
flooring, meaning it will last longer.
