My name is Jane Harrison and I am an Environmental Social Scientist for
Wisconsin Sea Grant. I was recently hired to do outreach program
management in the southeastern Wisconsin area. I'm based out of Milwaukee.
As a social scientist the kinds of
research questions that I look at are the "how's" and "why's" for
community engagement in natural resource management.
So when we think about a complex natural resource problem
it's not enough to have the best, say, biology
around an invasive species issue. We also need to know how
do people manage that species, what are the incentives
that people face when they're thinking about a natural resource
topic, what are their backgrounds, ideologies,
values, social networks that may influence them to
manage a natural resource in a particular way. Wisconsin Sea Grant has
never hired a social scientist in the past, I will be the first social
scientist for Wisconsin Sea Grant.
Their hope is that I can really assist them
in answering these more social questions
that will help them to better offer
natural resource advice for planners and management personnel.
I just moved to the Milwaukee area in the last few weeks
and I came from Oregon which is incredibly beautiful state,
however I've been pleased to find out that Wisconsin is similarly gorgeous.
I have spent time hiking in the Kettle Moraine forest,
rock climbin in the Devils Lake area and just enjoying the
lakefront of Lake Michigan along Milwaukee's coast.
I spend a lot of time with my dog Russell, he is a chocolate lab and he
loves to play outside, he loves to run along the lake,
I throw sticks for him and he runs out there and I'm hoping
that there aren't going to be too many algal blooms
that will keep him from playing in the lake.
