So you’ve probably noticed I’ve started to use a slightly smaller brush now on the shorter sections as we’re coming up onto the layers.
When I said to you earlier about drying the hair with a round brush
it's almost the brush has made the barrel for you which is almost so much easier.
So really what to do is just holding your blow dryer in place, so again I'm just going to pin
either side so again it takes a lot of the work out of it because you’ve already put the lift in with your blow dry.
I'm just working up onto these last sections now which are on the top section so worked at the sides.
Again you can see the sections are reasonably thick so don’t go too fine with them
otherwise there won’t be enough hair to actually hold the structure of the curl.
So again with your blow dryer you can see it just sits into the barrel on its own.
And again that hair is really quite hot to the touch so it's really doing the same
method exactly as if the hair had been set under a dryer and that’s the effect when you take rollers out that’s how the hair looks.
The nice thing about this is that it gives the hair a much more modern look,
when you take rollers out the hair actually tends to be crispy so it's almost like baked the products onto the hair.
I think the whole method of using the brush and the dryer although it's putting volume and setting the hair
it's tends to kind of smooth the cuticle out. When hair has been set this is all very crispy
and then you have to again get a brush to try and brush the curl out
but I think the trouble with that is then you’re kind of smoothing the hair too much
but you still want to leave a lot of the movement in.
You can actually take the hair out and leave it quite soft with the curl still in it.
Like I say with the set method you’re having to comb out the hair too much and it makes it look very old fashioned.
When we go to this front section I'm just going to divide this fringe section in three so taking the rest of it back as you can see.
Okay so there’s our finished barrel curl set
done in a contemporary fashion which is obviously the blow drying and then leaving it in the curls afterwards.
So just to recap really on how we achieve this
we shampooed and conditioned the hair just keeping the conditioned to mid length and ends not to make the roots too soft.
We applied about eight golf ball size amounts of mousse if not a little bit more
to give the hair maximum hold and then we start in the nape area, start to work up in sections
and split those sections then into three, blow dry them and then pin them into the barrels.
We use a larger brush on the longer hair and then we got to the short layers
I used a smaller brush again just to give you a firmer curl there.
And that’s our finished result.
Well I've just started to take the barrel pin curl down and the best way of taking these out
is just to very gently put your fingers either side of the clips and just release them so don’t drag the curl too much.
Again there get your fingers either side and just take those out
and the idea is you want to leave these curls in place until we dress the hair out
so again don’t be tempted just to start to drag your fingers through the hair.
And also as well with your client most clients want to go and handle their hair very quickly
so again if you just remind them just to leave it in place until you’ve finished dressing the hair.
A lot of the time when people wear their hair smoother when you have a bit of curl in the hair
it's an unusual look for them they’re not used to the amount volume so most people kind of want to start to
drag their hands through the hair straight way. So the best the way is just to get your client to wait until you can dress the hair out.
Another good way of holding in some of the curl that’s in there is just to put a little bit of back combing in
at the root area so I'm just going to spin the chair round.
So very gently clip the hair up out the way, with the fine end of the comb I'm initially just going to start to back comb one, two, three.
Again it's just giving you that bit of support at the root. One, two, three.
Again gently take the hair down,
one, two, three. You can see the volume that that’s giving it, it's just giving you support
to everything that you’ve been doing style wise
then take your sections, one two, three.
It's the kind of style that will even last you like a good couple of days, your client can brush their hair
even after sleeping on it the next morning it will still have a bit of bounce at the root, it gives it maximum root lift.
I mean barrel pin curls are designed mainly to give it root lift not really putting so much curl on ends.
The flat pin curl version tends to put a little bit more movement on the ends and not as much as the root.
You can always say to your client if they feel that the hair feels very big,
then you can run your fingers through it and then just dress some of the style down a bit but you’ll know it's got that root lift
and it won’t go flat on them.
And like I was saying earlier
you can see how soft the hair looks, it's still got a very natural feel where if you were set that under a dryer
the hair would feel extremely hard here and it wouldn’t have that same kind of softness.
And also this method as well we tend to find if you set hair under a dryer you tend to actually get what they call roller marks,
you can actually see where the rollers have been.
This way is a far more natural way of drying it you don’t really get roller marks so much in the hair so
when you brush your hands through the hair it has a much more of a natural fall to it
and also doesn’t tend to shrink back into those rollers, that’s what tends to happen when you set hair it just tends to
shrink back into the roller sections and it's very hard to get that unset look out of the hair.
Okay you want to just tip your head a little bit back for me. At this point now it's great to
just put some hairspray in really as well in at the roots just to distress out the final shape
then you can start to run your fingers through it as well.
You’ve already put your back combing in so you already know you’ve got your lift there.
Okay there we have it there’s our barrel curl blow dry, so that’s why I kind of decided to call it because I think
it's a mixture of both of those things, it’s giving you the look of a blow dry
but you’ve got the kind of volume of a barrel curl set in there as well.
