Welcome to Haiku, the Learning Management System at Vista Visions Academy. This video
will help you get started with Haiku. Once you have logged in, go to the upper right
corner and hover on your ID. You will see a pull down menu. Click on “My Information.”
Complete or change the information in the boxes such as your phone number and your email.
Click “Change Picture” and upload a picture of yourself.
Once you have confirmed your email, go back to the pull down menu and click on “Notifications.”
Click on” Instant Email” for everything. By doing this, you will automatically send
notification to your email when someone responds to a discussion, when there is a class announcement
or grades are posted. Be sure to click “Save.” Go back to the top and click on “My Classes”
to go back to the portal. Click on the class you want to work on. We will look at a Biology
class, but it will be similar to other classes in Haiku.
Note on the right hand side are rubrics and links to websites that will help you do your
work for this class. In Haiku, there are lots of activities. Let’s
explore some of them now. Each week, you will have one or more discussions.
To get to the discussion, click on the Discussion Link and enter your post.
In all discussions, use academic language and be aware of punctuation, grammar and capitalizations.
When you are finished writing your post, Click “Post.”
Generally, you will be asked to make an initial post and then respond to several other classmates.
See the discussion rubric on the opening page for more information on how these will be
scored. Each unit will have a number of assignments.
You will create one word document for all of your assignments in a unit. Here is a sample
student’s unit assignment. Be sure to number each assignment.
Although you may use Word, we recommend that you create a Google document in Google Drive,
and upload it as a PDF file. If you have any questions about how to use Google drive, ask
your teacher. You will turn in your word document with your
assignments to the dropbox. To get to the dropbox, go to the top and click on the “Connect
tab” and then the “Dropbox tab.” Be sure to find the correct title for the
assignment you are turning in. You may have to click on the next page to find the correct
place. Click on the “Hand in” button and then upload your assignment.
Sometimes, you will be asked to take a quiz in Haiku. These are called practices and there
will be a link to take you to the quiz. You will be asked to take tests in your classes.
These are called Exams in Haiku and need to be taken at school.
To take an exam, get a password from your teacher in order to open it. There will be
a variety of questions ranging from multiple choice, fill in the blank, (remember spelling
counts!) and short answer. Be sure to explain your answer completely on these.
There may be Wiki Projects assigned, either as class projects or individual projects.
Look for a link to the project directly below the project requirements. Click “View Projects”
and then “Go to my Wikisite.” Watch the Wiki Project tutorial on the opening page
for help. If you need to communicate with your teacher,
go to the top and click “Connect” and then click “Inbox” and then “Write.”
Type your message. Include a greeting, use academic language
with good spelling, capitals and punctuation. When you are finished, click “Send” and
the message will be sent to your teacher. Conversely, you may get messages from your
teacher in the inbox. To be successful at Vista Visions Academy,
it is very important to complete all of the work for each unit, before your weekly meeting
with your teacher. Good luck and see you in Haiku!
