Hi, what you up to?
proofreading
I hate proofreading!
it takes so long, and I never know if I found all the problems ... so what are you
going to do about it? What?
You've got a problem ... what solutions have you tried?
I do it until I get bored
then I stop
Has that solved the problem?
No
okay I'm done
that was quick
How do you know you've finished? There could be more mistakes ... I've got the
checklist
Show me!
here
wow
Where did you get this?
I wrote it!
at the start of the subject I went through the materials and wrote down
things that I didn't know
now if the teacher points out something new, I add it to the list
this is all about referencing ... yes this is my APA style referencing checklist, I have other lists, about other things
like other referencing styles and also about other assessment criteria like
grammar
that must take ages to go through
no after I stop making the mistake, I cross it off the list
there's no point having a long list, you just get bored and don't use it
Let's see what's on here
number one item
only use the family name
easy to say, a lot of times I don't know which name is the family name
Do a search on the library website for the author's name
if you get the names the wrong way round, there won't be any results
and it will suggest trying the names the other way
And if
the library doesn't have anything?
Internet search
and if that doesn't work?
CILL has a web page called list of other names check there
okay
item two
no initials in in-text references
I knew that
items three
include paragraph numbers for web references
How do you know the paragraph number?
count down from the top
or if there are sections, skip the section heading and then the paragraph
number
by counting the paragraphs under the heading
item four
include the year in all references but the month or day in the end-of-text
reference list only
I didn't know that
so start your own list and write it in
yeah later when I've finished reading yours okay?
item five ... for a long quotation put the page or paragraph number in brackets at the
end after the full stop
that's it
only five items?
Yes! The other items, I can remember
so I've crossed them off
okay
I'll start mine
but what should I start with?
what mistakes did you make last time?
right!
item one
put all short quotations in speech marks ... yes
item two
no titles in in-text references
item three
indent both sides of a long quotation
my phone's ringing
gotta go
don't make it more than one page long I'm not that bad at this!
