On this Saturday night showdown the USA and Russia
square off in epic Olympic hockey battle
storing echoes about Miracle on Ice three decades ago
she dangerous blazer
a fierce storm with damaging winds is barreling up the eastern seaboard
right thing that dump up to 2 feet of snow it
already hard-hit areas she and avalanche warning gum at a death toll out west
water being described as the worst
avalanches in 20 years
this is NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt
reporting tonight from the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi Russia
good evening we begin tonight with the superpower showdown on the Olympic
hockey ice here today that reverberated with Cold War rivalries another era
and ignited patriotic passion from Seattle to siberia
the USA versus Russia matchup easily lived up to the hype the Americans
winning at a heart-stopping
tie-breaking shootout the game just a preliminary match led the Russian
evening news
have the attention of both countries presidents latimer put new watch from
inside the arena
and President Obama back in California for later tweeted his congratulations to
TJ Oshie you made the winning shot
and the rest of the American team saying never stop believing in miracles
a subtle reference to another very famous US-russia showdown at the hockey
arena
NBC's Chris Jansing is here now with more on that the reaction both here and
at home my purse
well after all it's true that neither team was facing elimination tonight the
electricity and intensity at that matchup
had the feeling about gold medal final now under Olympic rules they were
essentially playing for seeding
but in fact national pride was on the line
in
the a monumental chapter in a decades-old rivalry
had bars from Hoboken to all still to come on the
opening before breakfast yeah because in Russia
fans were anxious for a rematch 34 years after a little game deemed
the Miracle on Ice going to be very pretty yeah
college throwing even an instant classic could just sense the Americans who were
there though
oh yeah yeah absolutely i mean you could hear him oh yeah
the bogus heavily Russian crowd including Vladimir Putin
inside and Russian viewing parties outside
the faces
telling the tale of 65 minutes apart hounding intensity
for a 2-2 tie
overtime and then it went to a sudden-death shootout
what emotions are going to you at that moment and it's a roller coaster the
shoot up is obviously every a every shot they caused by the
game can change good pressure on both sides man said
Russian judging the successive these games on winning hockey gold
and so much riding on this *** up TJ Oshie
have you ever felt more pressure the dinners moment
I don't know it's it's hard I once the park case has your stick you can adjust
I everything kinda goes away so armpit leading up to it was
I was shaken a little that on the 14 shot Oshie put the game away
%uh on the tail lights done just a plan for the russians the
for america's imagine yeah
yeah in
and for Team USA come here I was made yeah I'll
sorry kid have a test to the sports world is spoken for
ok she said after the game he texted his girlfriend that he be at the office a
little while longer
now there is other Olympic news tonight before the 1500 meter speed skating
final
Team USA ditch their high-tech suits after a disappointing series of races
didn't help Americans finished out at the battles
but oh those hockey player and I'm just thinking what happens if those two teams
play for the gold medal match
gonna be hispanic boy so be up for grabs Costanza gonna see if banks
back in the US in contrast to what was another 60 degree day here in So Ji
Blizzard watches are up in new england is another major storm batters the
eastern seaboard
NBC's Ron Mott is just north of Boston in Revere Massachusetts
where it's really coming down ROM hey there must agree to you your blizzard
warning is in effect for coastal massachusetts tonight as you can see
where been pelted by strong winds
that of course will raise the possibility of dangerous if not
impossible driving conditions
and widespread power outages on with barely a 24-hour breather from the last
storm
parts of the northeast and New England are getting whacked yet again
this is going to be the second major snowstorm in about 48 hours for part to
the north east this weekend
as much as two feet of snow was forecast to fall dangerously strong winds the
bits to
it's highly unusual to get to storms in just three days to go through this kind
of explosive development we call this Bama Genesis
that means tonight wind gust as high as hurricane-force snowfall rates as much
as
two to three inches an hour and there could even be Thunder snow
Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick warn residents to stay off the roads
under these conditions it really isn't possible
for us to keep the roads clear and safe given the raid
a snowfall loser warnings have hospitals on and near Cape Cod on standby for
possible spike in emergencies
we also expected to be a big bowl so traffic that happens once the storm
what's right
it's been a day of disruptions at the airport passengers forced to sleep in
philadelphia
roughly eight thousand flights delayed around the today nationwide
more than 75,000 flights have been canceled in the past two and a half
months
the highest number in more than 25 years and the relentless know is becoming more
than just
an inconvenience in New York a snowplow sedan I see trash can fly into a
restaurant window in Queens
what people 8 inside roof collapses are piling up in the region
the ceiling just let loose and everything just came down within 30
seconds it collapsed this one at a sports complex in New Jersey
for workers inside escaped our do the South
Thunder snow in Virginia in South Carolina
who's from several neighboring states are working around the clock to restore
electricity from Wednesday's
icestorm some 125,000 still in the dark
and tonight its coastal Massachusetts and Maine in the crosshairs
now the silver lining with this storm compared to some the recent ones this
was expected to hit and run pretty quickly we think it will taper off in
the overnight hours by the time folks wake up in the morning lester
it should be mostly clear are alleged rolled out a bit more on what folks can
expect tonight in this weekend Weather Channel meteorologist Jim Cantore he is
on the KP's tracking the storm from Chatham Massachusetts
temp yeah good evening lester we are not massachusetts
elbow here the farthest southeast point and we are taking a moderate sleet storm
right now
on the heels of thirty-five to forty mile per hour winds SOC to use me that
stings
just a little bit believe it or not they call this pleasant day where you don't
usually see Whitecaps
but we are poll them tonight the radar showing us know all the way from New
Jersey
throw new york up into Boston right out into new england
its summer this is already accumulated four to six inches there is another foot
in many places to come in some cases two feet look at the snowfall totals
Boston by time all is said and done five to eight inches locally afoot even up in
a main 18 to 24
plates though wins that will be so powerful from eight o'clock tonight
through 7 a.m. tomorrow morning I mean look at the winds here in Chatham
we're gonna go from fifty to sixty miles an hour
midnight possibly 75 miles per hour
that's why they call these winter storms Mother Nature's Way hurricanes
and that's exactly what this will deliver up to tomorrow the Sun comes out
lester
but not before pounding this area with another snowstorm the second major
nor'easter
in three days up here back to you will work will lead to get out of the gym
can't sorry thank you
sharing the weather misery battering the eastern US
is great britain being hit by what's described as the worst
run off whether in two hundred fifty years in fact take a look
at this incredible satellite photo which shows the latest storms in the US
an UK linked by a sweeping bad of clouds
across the Atlantic in the UK the deadly storm is causing major flooding and
power outages
NBC's Mike Taibbi has our report from London
now surging win with she's
torrential rain or both one official said a conveyor belt to storm system
since the first to the year
has made this the wettest most dangerous winter on record
overnight masonry from London building was blown onto a car below
killing the woman at the wheel a monster wave crashed into a cruise ship
killing a male passenger 32 people rescued from a restaurant
when the search driven by hurricane-force gusts invited itself in
the wind was just rushing against the windows there was glass everywhere
they just it wasn't safe for anyone and it's not safe for tens of thousands of
homes now swamped
after major rivers including the terms burst their banks
the only way to get to some neighborhoods is by both or in our case
by amphibious duck boat my one Weather Service estimate
if the rain stops today and it has not been waiting weeks if not months but
conditions in the flood plain mistrial in the Thames
to get back to normal the flood waters have crippled
rail service and made walking difficult escaping by car as many have tried
difficult at best going to wait all night
don't know where else to go the meantime huge pumps from the Netherlands are
churning 24 7 percent water back into the river
the army join the All Hands emergency response
and even princes william and harry let a royal hand
in the same back brigade but the waters have been relentless
we have got some other communities very nearby where they are starting to
experience flooding
so that means levels are definitely rising the worst having the worst
modern-day weather crisis
not yet over my Kb NBC news/wall
there's late breaking news from jacksonville florida jury has just
reached a verdict in the trial of a 47-year-old man
who shot and killed a teenager during an argument at a gas station over loud
music
Michael Dunn use Florida's controversial Stand Your Ground law
as a defense NBC's Kerry Sanders joins us now from the courthouse
in Jacksonville carry will Lester after four days have considering all the
evidence in this case the jury has come back on that
first-degree *** charge deadlocked and the judge has now said that there is
a mis-trial
on that count however when Michael Dunn fired at the vehicle and fired
10 shots nine hit the car there were three other people
in the car the jury your did agree that those shots were
attempted *** for the three other people in the car so he's guilty on
those
attempted *** charges could get was
twenty years for each had those charges which could lead up to sixty years if
they're consecutive
and he was convicted by the jury for firing
a missile at a car the case however on the first-degree *** charge
is now one that the prosecutor will have to once again consider if they're going
to
impanel another jury and bring those charges again
for him to stand first-degree *** charges
again Michael done tonight will be in
a jail here he's been convicted on three counts of attempted ***
lester Jerry Sanders in Jacksonville without force I carry thanks
in we're back now they're so cheesy Olympics are a lot of bad today by far
the highlight of the day has been Team USA's dramatic victory over the russians
in men's hockey and probably nowhere in america
is there a bigger celebration tonight then a tiny town
were two members of the US team are from including the hero
up today's game there's NBC's Kevin Tibbles
was Warroad Minnesota ended seventeen hundred hardy citizens
so close to the Canadian border you can walk it
but not today it's minus 18
much warmer inside wall Rhodes arena the which just happens to hold
about 1700 people had the hometown lawyers battle rivals
from up the road everybody want to see this game
they call this place the original Hockeytown at the local cafe folks a
life's lessons are learned on the ice you have to learn to
to lose as long as bigan winners
and good community people world's biggest export
olympians in so she there are two of them
including TJ Oshie the hero up today's men's game against Russia
US doesn't win a gold medal in lesser somebody more about me
it's true when the men's team struck gold in nineteen sixty
and again for nineteen eighties Miracle on Ice a war Roeder
was there and current olympian GG marvin was on the women's team
that once over in Vancouver things
never forgotten down at the rink my grandpa always the senate's must be some
in the water
I Gordon Christian and two of his brothers
went to the olympics he won silver in 1956
I'll that's what you wore yes could still fit
little bit then I Henry boucher says
he never forgot his hometown when he won silver in 1972
every person that puts on a USA uniform
realizes and appreciate where they come from and
and who has helped them along the road for TJ Oshie
Warroad is where he learned to love the game
you didn't they take days off even iff you did not practice in every game
you're fine with me out there so
I think I finalist in games where I really found the love for
they start them young here came back your drinks can be an elaborate affair
guys are animals tough competitors
but like every one more road United in support of their own
the and Lester I was one of the lucky ones the score a ticket to today's game
inside the bolshoi a ice storm it was rockin it was loud
it was colorful and it was good natured and all the Russian fans
like your and they were in the majority like you heard in Crysis by shouting
Chaibou Chaibou that means Park
put the puck in the net and that's what TJ Oshie did less corrosive Warroad well
represented here for that
alright karen thanks very much when we come back heavy snow out west causing
some other
biggest avalanches good luck
back now and so do we turn to where the devastating effective what's been an
overabundance of snow in the mountains in the western US
avalanches just in the past week a syriza battle answers in
Oregon Utah and Colorado have claimed at least
six lives NBC's Ron Allen has more on the continuing danger
in colorado's back country without warning an avalanche
obliterated snowmobiler Cody strong his helmet camera capturing the horrifying
moments
I would normally hold I was just
flying through the air and in it happened so fast
snow some 4 BD push to more than 30 yards down the mountain
miraculously he and his friends dug themselves out
only injured like where I was at a particular time
was not very smart of me this week alone at least six people died in avalanches
in three western states
that's 12 deaths so far this winter when Kevin Kyburz
46 an experienced skier got trapped by an avalanche
it took rescuers and hour to find his body
I don't think any of us gave up opened into we heard that the final news
this massive avalanche of snow and ice has blocked off Valdez Alaska
population 4,000 officials are now urging Bollant area back you Asians
in Colorado's mountains where crews use explosives to trigger slides
to prevent avalanches forecasters say
this season is on track to be the worst in 20 years
the problem has been several big storm systems overloading the snowpack
creating snow accumulations twice the normal average
in some areas and more coming that's our
fear right now there's just a another storm another storm in another storm out
there on the horizon experts strongly advise using safety equipment
like the airbag in this video keeping the skier on top with the sliding snow
next time strong says he will be much more cautious
you must be grateful that this was a lot worse
we're pretty lucky avalanche warnings remain in place
out in the wilderness all across the west
1 I'll on NBC News Los Angeles
an amazing story has emerged in the wake up that massive 100 vehicle pile-up
along the Pennsylvania Turnpike yesterday
caught in the gridlock history teacher Lynn McNulty
who used her iPhone to make sure her class continued
a splash they knew I meant business and
I was stuck on the side their own that we were going to buckle down have class
anyway
so no snow day for them but nobody says she was caught in the gridlock for four
and a half hours
do
doing so would she be bobsled competition kicks off tomorrow with the
return on the Jamaicans
this of course is not the same team that took Calgary by storm back in the eighty
eight olympics
the one thing they only managed to qualify a two-man sled
this time still their arrival here in So Ji created a fair amount of excitement
over their legacy
and the obstacles they overcame to get here it was questionable whether the
Jamaican bobsled team would qualify for these games
thanks ambassador and barely a month ago it wasn't
open question whether they could even afford to fly here
my long blamed for they arrived here
hours late a missed flight connection and missing luggage including some
critical equipment
was an apt metaphor is for the perpetually up hill story on this team
from a sunny climate that in the 1988 Calgary Olympics delighted the world
later became the basis for a comedy film classic gentleman
this is a bobsled sorta but it hasn't necessarily
all been cool runnings for the real Jamaican team
in they failed to qualify for the last two Olympics
and they struggled to find sponsors when I caught up with the team in December
during qualifications
times relieving the thing is we're we're one of the most famous team
tour the world but the most poor steam amor after clinching a spot in so cheap
the team revealed they didn't have enough cash to afford the trip
reaction was immediate within days fans and supporters
raise more than a hundred thousand dollars for the Jamaicans
the outpouring was incredible how much money was raised in a very short amount
of time
what do you think was behind that so much behind its its people
people wanna see Jamaica team oh they're you know I know they miss the Jamaican
team
finally after a 12-year absence the Jamaican flag was raised above the
Athletes Village
and while here in So Ji there soaking up the smiles and fame that comes from
there cool runnings legacy
they don't want their appearance here to be seen as some sort of movie nostalgic
to win
this 46 years old western watch came out of retirement to lead the team
I'm not just and so too because I want to be here
but I'm here to compete as serious contenders the Jamaicans have climbed a
lot of mountains to earn their place back in the Olympics
I'm hoping its all downhill from here
there's a delay can play flying in Russia
today that over the correspondent here
I again the Jamaican bobsled team competes tomorrow here in so too we will
be following all the action
that NBC Nightly News for this Saturday I'm Lester Holt
reporting from the Olympic Games is so Chelsea tomorrow morning on today
and we hope to see you right back here tomorrow night and a reminder prime time
Olympic coverage begins at
87 central once again anchor tonight by our own
Meredith Vieira for all of us here at NBC News
goodnight sheath
