What do you need to plant a tree?
a shovel, and some soil,
oh yeah, and a telephone.
It sounded odd to me too but in California, anytime you dig a hole or pound a
stake in the ground.
You must dial 811 first. It's the law.
These pictures show why. You're required to call two days
before you do any digging,
and then the utility has two days to come out and mark out what is in that area.
Under every property there is a maze of cables and pipes carrying
things like water and TV cables.
Pipes carrying natural gas and electricity too.
Every day we go out on damages where some
mom or pop's are working in their back yards.
And just like you said, putting in a new fence, putting in a new tree. So it's very important
that you call underground service. You see it all the time on the news.
The results can be deadly.
Gas explosions or electrocutions.
Avoiding them is easy.
Now you as a homeowner or contractor have two responsibilities. First call
dig alert at 811.
Let them know where you are going to be digging,
and then take some white marker paint and delineate the area where you're
going to dig. From there, the utility will come out and mark where the lines are
and its absolutely free.
at the SDG&E yard in Carlsbad there is a wall of shame showing some
of the ruptured pipes they have encountered,
when people dig before they have dialed.
A simple call is all it takes: 811 and you can avoid a big fine or worse.
Just thought you'd like to know.
Anytime you dig into the ground,
you need to know.
You need to know what's in the ground.
