Times are changing for gender equality in the workplace.
In late 2012 new legislation, the Workplace Gender Equality Act, came into effect replacing
the Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Act.
With a broader focus that promotes both women and men in the workplace the Act is intended
to promote and improve gender equality in the workplace, including, equal remuneration
for women and men, recognise family and caring responsibilities, and improve the nation's
productivity and competitiveness.
As the Government's key agency for workplace gender equality, we work with employers to
help them improve their gender performance.
The key changes that employers will experience include online reporting and a new and comprehensive
workplace profile and reporting questionnaire.
There will also be the continuation of notification and access requirements, and for the CEO to
sign the report.
For the 2013 to14 reporting period organisations are required to report on both the workplace
profile and the reporting questionnaire.
The workplace profile sets out the composition of your workforce in the following categories;
gender, Employment status, Remuneration and the occupational classification of managers
and non-managers.
Reporting organisations will also be required to complete the reporting questionnaire which
covers the standardised reporting matters under six gender equality indicators. These
are often referred to as the GEIs or indicators.
The first indicator 1 seeks information about the gender composition of the workforce, and
the policies and strategies that support gender equality.
Indicator 2 collects data on gender composition, targets and the selection policy or strategy
of your governing body.
Indicator 3 collects information on remuneration data, remuneration policy, any pay gap analysis
and any actions taken as a result of a gender pay analysis. Salary data will be kept confidential
and if published will only be at an aggregate or industry level.
Indicator 4 includes paid parental leave, flexible working arrangements and support
for family or caring responsibilities.
Indicator 5 collects data on how and which employees your organisation has consulted
with on workplace gender equality.
And finally, Indicator 6 collects data on sex-based harassment and discrimination.
By collecting this data we will be able to assist organisations by providing industry
specific benchmarks against each GEI.
We understand that annual reporting can be daunting, to help you, we have made the process
simple.
To get ready for reporting, make sure you are set up with an AUSkey. Most organisations
will have an AUSkey for reporting to the ATO. Ensure systems are set up to collect the required
data, identify key stakeholders for notification and access requirements, and schedule in time
for your CEO to review and sign the report.
