the first course I did was at Olba
during the 2nd session in August
I just did a google search at the beginning for
volunteer archaeology projects,so just around the world
and I think I found you guys on PASTHORIZONS website
I work in Swansea university
I like to do archaeology when I can
when I see things like this come up on facebook
or the internet
I think I wanted to go to a country I haven't visited before
and see what archaeology was like there
The BAJR site,yeah
where all my friends look out for things like this
I loved the didactic of the course
how methodology was taught
people are just in groups
some people are learning maybe a new skill
some people are excavating and then you have a switch around
so you never get bored and you gotta try a bit of everything
which is really nice
then we have shifted into the burials
it has been more delicate: scalpel, trowel
You learn really
In the evening
we have made pottery drawing
I really enjoyed
we had the lectures at night and
that's been really nice as well
just sit and chat about what we've seen and
what it means in their greater historical context of the area
I've been doing so many things that I've never done before
cause am a burial expert
I just tend to dig and expose remains from the corpse
and I've never had the chance to
do recording or drawing
I just found I love doing the drawing
and the instruction was clear and precise and
after doing It once or twice I'm quite
confident been able going do It myself
I don't know, methodology is completely different
also the layers are different too
the ground itself is flat
then we had the "siesta" to safe time after lunch
and get the chance to take a break and freshing up
rescue archaeology
how do you work, how it is
we had to draw a potts
so am going home to smash my garden potts
am gonna practice some drawing
and also drawing site plans
was something I haven´t really done before
there were so many things that we've learned
how permissions are requested
the way we proceed when...
all previous steps before
arriving with your trowell and the pick
and dig like crazy
I think...I've got to be honest
I think this is the best
one of the best projects that I've been on
for comfort and... the food is just amazing
the food is wonderful
I'm afraid that we are going to gain weight cause it was buffet
camping is not my favourite thing
so I was a little worried about that
but this is a really nice camping facility and comfortable
we're not suffering at all
with cafes and nice pools
and nice showers facilities and all that stuff
so It's a really good place to stay
I would come here on vacation
we're realizing that
archaeology is not only come
with a small brush and a trowel
but a lot of things
like permissions, know the heritage law
legal stuff, calculate deadlines...
various
costs
I think it's a good experience
to get into the whole subject of archeology
I think just the whole thing's been organized so well
and we´ve been so well adapted
they talked to us about emergency archaeology guidelines
we also talked about the business general area
about the documentation that has to be done, that´s been new
cad and we had the pottery overview
overview which was super interesting and really kind of help understand
the great history of the area and what it means when we find out here
kind of what it represents
and we also walked around all the other sites in this area
even now we might be working in just one time period
of all the other time periods that are represented in this general area
and then we got to go to the museum in Castellón
which am probably saying wrong...
It is open to both
amateur and experienced people
It's open to anybody who wants to do It
and I like the idea of having students
so they get some
really hands on sort of thing
and we need to keep students interested
to make sure we get the future archaeologists
I'm sure I will repeat again because
I really like how they explain to us
well, of course
the history is really amazing and interesting and complex
so it's exciting to see that all by first hand
instead of just read about It
and It's a beautiful country
so far everyone it's been friendly...
and have also attended two colleagues archaeologists
from United States and United Kingdom
and have showed us how it works there archaeology
which is so different
thank you very much to all you guys for
taking so much time with us
and interpreting everything for us
cause we do not speak spanish
and it's been really brilliant, absolutely brilliant
I have also learned photography
archaeological photography
I didn't learn that in Olba and I have learned
I've been on other programs like this and
you guys are so patient and so kind
even If you have to repeat it a few times
or give us extra time
then you totally allowed us to learn at our own pace
and giving us a lot of opportunities to say
what we were interested in or ask questions
and that´s just been really wonderful
and the camping has been very well
3 swimming pools...
it can't be asked for more
I don't wanna go home
