Minnesota Bluegrass and Old Time Music Festival
at El Rancho Manana near Richmond, Minnesota.
(upbeat bluegrass music)
Grassland Jam showcases the main stage performances
presented during the four-day festival
by regional and national bands.
Now, from the main stage, Monroe Crossing.
(fiddle music)
I'm a lady mule skinner
From Minnesota way hey hey
I can make any mule listen
Or I won't accept your pay hey hey
Yodel-a-ee-he-he
He-he-he-he-he-he
(banjo music)
Now listen
Little water boy
Bring that water bucket round
If you don't like your job
Just sit that water bucket down
Yodel-a-ee-he-he
He-he-he-he-he-he
(mandolin music)
Yodel-a-ee-he-he
He-he-he-he-he-he
He-he-he
(audience cheers and applauds)
- One, two, three...
(fiddle music)
Been sailing round the sea of life
To everywhere the wind's been blowing
It's like the dull edge of a knife
Always right but never knowing
It's a mixed up world you know it's true
Spinning round and round
Feels like nothing you can do
It's easy to get lost
When you don't know where you're going
(mandolin music)
(banjo music)
(fiddle music)
It's a hard luck game that you play
When your cards are always showing
They've got their aces facing up
And you know you should be folding
Life is a gamble you know it's true
Spinning round and round
Feels like nothing you can do
It's easy to get lost
When you don't know where you're going
(banjo music)
(fiddle music)
(mandolin music)
There's a darkness rolling in
Started small but now it's growing
It's a crazy mess to be in
Was a drip now it's flowing
It's a mixed up world you know it's true
Spinning round and round
Feels like nothing you can do
It's easy to get lost
When you don't know where you're going
Yes it's easy to get lost
When you don't know where you're going
(audience cheers and applauds)
- Hey, thank you, folks.
Hello, music lovers, thank you so much.
We're Monroe Crossing.
We're very happy to be here at the 35th anniversary
MBOTMA Bluegrass and Old Time Music Festival.
(crowd cheers) Yeah!
Great variety of music.
I'd like to introduce our banjo player,
who is the newest member of Monroe Crossing.
He's been with us for two and a half years.
And we had some auditions for a banjo player awhile back,
and he was the last one to come over.
And he just blew us away,
not only with his banjo playing but with his wardrobe.
Those shoes are fantastic.
If you can't seem them, you're not sitting close enough.
Three more payments, and they're his.
- You know, it dawned on me backstage, man?
Benji was known for his bowler hat.
David's known for his bowler shoes.
- Originally from Muncie, Indiana,
more recently De Pere, Wisconsin.
Make welcome on the banjo, Mr. David Robinson.
(whistles theme from "The Andy Griffith Show")
- Yeah, the band knows that's my favorite TV show.
I watch it all the time.
We're actually going to do an Earl Scruggs banjo tune.
It would not be bluegrass without the three-finger
banjo style of Earl Scruggs himself.
And this was actually a request by you, Matt.
- Yes, I love this song.
- You turned me on to this tune.
It's one called "Dear Old Dixie".
(upbeat banjo music)
(fiddle music)
(banjo music)
(mandolin music)
(upright bass music)
(banjo music)
(audience cheers and applauds)
- Thank you, we're gonna feature David
on this next tune as well.
Any Stanley Brothers fans out there?
There's gotta be.
(audience cheers)
Here's an especially lonesome number by those guys
called "Another Night".
(mandolin music)
The winds are blowing
'Cross the cabin
I hate to hear
That lonesome sound
I'm all alone
And so downhearted
Since my true
Love ain't around
I hate to see
That sun a-sinking
Another night
To toss and turn
Another night
To dream about her
Another night
For her I yearn
(fiddle music)
She had no cause
To go and leave me
For I have never
Done her wrong
She left our home
And little children
Out with another
Man she's gone
I hate to see
That sun a-sinking
Another night
To toss and turn
Another night
To dream about her
Another night
For her I yearn
(harmonica music)
(crowd cheers and applauds)
Children they
Are soundly sleeping
They don't know that
Their mother is gone
What should I do
When they awaken
How can I tell
Them about their mother's wrongs
I hate to see
The sun a-sinking
Another night
To toss and turn
Another night
To dream about her
Another night
For her I
Yearn
(audience cheers and applauds)

When I was a child I used to
Love to watch the rain
I'd stand under the downspout
Let the cool water cool my brain
I never thought to worry
If the river rose too high
That all the seeds we'd planted
Would get washed out with the tide
But now I am a man
And I need a place to hide
But there's nowhere to run
And there's no place to hide
Where the water runs free
And the mud starts to slide
(steel guitar music)
When I was a young man
I could work through wind and rain
I never thought to worry
Had no reason to complain
I thought that I was standing
On a rock so firm and strong
But it was easy then to see
Just what was right and what was wrong
But now I am a man
I won't be hanging around too long
(mandolin music)
When I was a child
I used to love to watch the rain
I'd stand under the downspout
The cold water cooled my brain
I never thought to worry
If the river rose too high
That all the dreams we'd planted
Would get washed out with the tide
But there's nowhere to run
And there's no place to hide
Where the water runs free
And the mud starts to slide
Where the water runs free
And the mud starts to slide

Well down the road just a mile or two
There's a little girl named Curly Blue
About so high and her hair is brown
Prettiest thing boys in this town
Well any time you wanna know
Where I'm headed down the road
Get my girl on the line
You'll find me there most any old time
Well on that flat beyond the farm
From the hog lot to the barn
From the barn to the rail
He made his living by carrying the mail
Well every time I get the blues
I walk the soles right off my shoes
I don't know why I love her so
That gal of mine lives down the road
(steel guitar music)
Well down the road just a mile or two
Lives a little girl named Curly Blue
About so high and her hair is brown
The prettiest thing boys in this town
(audience cheers and applauds)
(banjo music)
Don't let your deal go down good boys
Never let your deal go down
Don't let your deal go down good boys
When you're last one dollar is gone
Well I've been all around
This whole wide world
I been down to
Sunny Alabam'
Mama she always
Told me son
Never let your deal go down
Don't let your deal go down good boys
Never let your deal go down
Don't let your deal go down good boys
When your last one dollar is gone
(steel guitar music)
Now the last time I seen
That gal of mine
She was standing in the door
Saying honey I'll be
A long time gone
You'll never see your gal no more
(guitar music)
(mandolin music)
(banjo music)
Don't let your deal go down good boys
Never let your deal go down
Don't let your deal go down good boys
When your last one dollar is gone
(audience cheers and applauds)
(bluegrass music)
I've been waiting
And hesitating
Lost and looking for a sign
I've been crying
And I've been lying
To myself when I said I don't need you
Like leaves in the fall
Like shadows in the dawn
I'm fading
Seems I've left it all behind except my pride
Leaving me nowhere else to run and hide
I've been waiting
(banjo music)
Been on the chase
Trying to erase
The pain I can't seem to hide
I've been faking it
Barely making it
Running lost I can't seem to find the way
Like leaves in the fall
Like shadows in the dawn I'm fading
Seems I've left it all behind except my pride
Leaving me nowhere else to run and hide
I've been waiting
(steel guitar music)
I've been trying it
I'm not buying it
They say time can erase your memory
But time keeps moving on
I'm still going wrong
Days months years I don't have a clue
Like leaves in the fall
Like shadows in the dawn I'm fading
Seems I've left it all behind except my pride
Leaving me nowhere else to run and hide
I've been waiting
