What's up my gadget loving geeks, it's December 23rd 2013, I'm Dave, your watching Computing
Forever, and these are the tech stories that are currently making headlines.
First up, Apple's new Mac Pro is sold out world wide! That's impressive considering
it's only been available for like 4 days. This completely redesigned model of Apple's
workstation computer is being praised from all quarters for its sheer power and in particular
its performance in Final Cut Pro for editing of 4K video.
Although the price is insane for a machine that is basically non-upgradable and going
to create a monumental cable mess on your desk, it is a beast. In addition to that,
you have to remember a very important point, the new technology standards Apple have implemented
like making USB 3.0 and Lightning ports the standard I/O, means those relying on older
inputs like FireWire are left out in the cold. Whenever major technological advances like
this happen it means that all your old tech has to be upgraded too. So your external hard
drives and cameras that made use of these old interfaces are going to have to be changed
also. That might mean many Pro users will remain on the old tower Mac Pro for some time
to come.
Moving on, More Apple News. iOS 7 has now been jail broken! Again you say? Well turns
turns out this is the first time it's been jail broken, I just assumed someone had done
it by now. It's been out for over 2 months and their only doing this now? Wow those hackers
are really losing their edge!
Next up, Something completely different, but you know, still smartphone related, so not
completely different then. BLU Products have introduced a new $349 unlocked
smartphone with a 5-inch display and a 1080p resolution. Yep, a fairly premium specced
device at an affordable price, that rhyme was unintentional.
The Life Pure Smartphone offers a 13 MP rear camera and a 5MP front shooter, there's also
32GB of storage. The processor is a solid 1.5GHz Quad-Core MediaTek Chip and although
it doesn't support LTE, it does have 2GB of RAM. So, every cloud....
Speaking of cloud, If you're a Windows Phone user, prepare to get your SkyDrive on, Microsoft
are offering 20GB of storage for free for 1 year. You've got till the end of January
to claim your storage. Microsoft are continuing to give 200GB of free data allowance for two
years to those who have recently purchased Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets. So feel
free to sign up to that and I'm sure they won't share your data with the NSA.
That's my final Tech News update of 2013 although there will be a couple of more videos before
the end of the year. Stay tuned for my 2013 Year in Review video also and my exclusive
December 2013 Newsletter video, you can sign up for that over on ComputingForever.com.
I am burned out and exhausting from all this video making recently, so I am going to take
a well deserved Christmas holiday and I hope you do too. And if you don't celebrate Christmas,
I still hope you have fun and enjoy the time off work. Also I have recently rediscovered
Unreal Tournament 3. I know it's old, but don't judge me. Warfare mode is awesome!
