What you should not bring to an IRS audit? When you are selected for audit, you will
be told the specific items on your tax return for which the IRS desires that you bring in
additional information that can be both on the income side and along the expenses side.
If you're asked to bring in just receipts for certain items on your let's say Schedule
C business income return make sure that you bring in all the receipts and support for
those items. What you want to make sure you don't do is bring in all your receipts to
document all of the items on your tax return so you have just lots and lots of extra information
but the IRS Auditor says well let's just go through and take a look at more things than
we had originally asked for so where you have all your documentation and your receipts for
lots and lots of different items. Let's say you have them sorted by month, you need to
go through your records first and make sure that you pull out only those items that are
applicable to specific items on the Schedule C and let's say that have been requested and
don't take in necessary all of your receipts and expenses. Make sure that you narrow down
and have clear, concise need and orderly for the IRS Auditor just those items that have
been requested. You don't want to take in everything just need to take in what has been
asked for. Make sure it's assembled. Make sure it does agree to the tax return. If it
doesn't, you'll understand that it might be an adjustment at the conclusion of the audit.
