well hello there welcome to a blender tutorial this is my attempt at a
series called Blender for Dummies and its gonna start off really easy and
hen get more complicated and hopefully people will learn lotsa stuff.
so this is the first one umm starting out uh basically showing you the interface although I have done this before in lets build a sim
since this is a new series I thought I would repeat this information.
So anyways we are using 2.63 they are up to 2.67 um they look slightly different but they both work the same way.
So here we are usually when you open it up there you get a default cube just like this and this will be open as well uh its got all
these measurements and view and stuff. um and you get this default cube so I thought I would show a few things off with this
first.
So this is our main screen or at least this is the screen we are going to be using.
So shift C will center the screen so we have number pad 1 is like front , numberpad 3 is right , numberpad 5 is the other right :)
and numberpad 7 is Top and we use those a lot.
so the other thing we do um I am gonna delete this cube right now. so X to delete. The other thing we do a lot is move around.
We do it using our mousewheel scroll in and out . You can hold the shift key and the middlemouse button down and you can move
We do it using our mousewheel scroll in and out . You can hold the shift key and the middlemouse button down and you can move
the whole dang thing around.
Now the other thing that is kinda unique to Blender is uh something called a 3D cursor that's this when I click my left mouse
button this little circle thingy with a target in it moves around and what that is uh you can move it anywhere and you can snap things
to it or you can spawn another object there. So shift A add a cube and its gonna spawn at the 3D cursor. So that is kinda handy.
So the other thing we quite often need to do is make or change our work area so you do that by joining areas or splitting areas ..
split or .. split this some more.. anyways ..
you can move the button bar up, join it, you can split it again.
This is my favourite 3D view and here we would have our other view quite often and I do a lot of modelling so this is where I would
have my textures and UV maps
So lets say you create a desktop that you like you can save it. Save user preferance settings.
Although in the newest versions the default is the most popular anyhow they changed it and its pretty much this split screen but
with the cube. So if you want to save yourself some work delete the cube and save your settings.
Um I dont really know what to say about it at this point in time.. um this is the animation down at the bottom
um if you want to add in some extra addons you would go into user preferances. I have a lot already, but uh this is all your addons.
This is like really important for us um except I dont think I need to add anything. I have got my exporter and stuff so this is where
find things. You load them into the file folder and then they pop up here and you check it in. Motion capture.. dont need that ..
anyhow so that is our user preferances and then you save it as default.
So I dont know if there is much else we can do there....Now I thought I would go over the basics of what modelling is which is a
lot of extruding, mirroring and moving vertexes around. Eventually you kinda get more sophisticated but I thought I would start by
building a Gingerbread Man and we will make him move next tutorials.
So shift A ... why do I wanna build a gingerbread man.. I will call him a stickman. I like stickmen anyways
Shift A here is our cube edit mode
its got 4 vertexes on top and we have got faces and we have got edges
so faces i guess I use edges a lot too
so shift C
now lets see how am I going to do this stick man so lets pull up this to start with
and a stick man two legs, two arms and a head.
Now our next thing is we are gonna select loop cut and slide and hit page up a bunch of times to make the loops more.
Was that too fast? and then I dunno do one down the center here?
2 lets do 2 page up once and I am gonna add another one in the center here.
So there is our basic stickman we are gonna work with. So now what I am going to do is make an arm.
E and Y axis. Here is an arm. So there is one arm.. Next we are going to Extrude pull it on the z axis ...
Does that look like a stickman?
and that should be done like that now... you say "you have only done one side".. and I say "yes I have!" and then you say "but
why?" and I say "because I am going to make him identical on both sides" so we will
press this button down here so I can see everything and press B oops..
press A which selects everything or deselects everything . And we are gonna do that again press B and then we press X
and then we are going to delete the faces.
Now we are going to go over to this console on the right side, select modifiers, look for mirror and select it and then the Y axis.
There we are . . now he is identical on both sides. Oh I didnt do something right I am gonna fix it.
Delete these faces. There we are now the top...
we are going to make a head we are going to pick one face and then Extrude and pull it up on the Z axis and then we are going to
extrude it one more time
[music]
and then we will pull it on the Y axis and pull up this way .. now does that look right? I guess its okay.. and now I am gonna press
edges.
He is kind of a block head aye?
I think he is almost done and put loop cut and slide .. that is kind of circular...we just need to make it a bit bigger
[music]
scale on the x axis
[music]
here we are I would say that classifies as a gingerbread man or a stickman. Gingerbread man?
A gingerbread man is a little more phoomphy should we make him a little more phoomphy?
[music]
I guess that is about right
[music]
okay so there is our guy um I am gonna call him done I have no idea how he is gonna animate..
we are just gonna have him walk when we get to that part [chuckle] Isn't he cute?
okay so we have got that done um he is pretty much done? .. I am gonna make him a bit rounder.. because he is kinda like flat..
nope that is not quite what i had in mind.. um scale in x axis nope
okay lets turn on connected ...and we will see how that works there we are page down to decreate that range scale on the X axis.
There he looks a bit more chubby scale in the X
There he is definately kind of chubby looking..
okay so ya that's done!
[music]
yup there is our little man. I dont know if your gonna like that or not anyways I kinda like this i dont know how to call it.. kiddy like stuff?
Now I have done all the modelling I am gonna do.. using that mirror so I press apply and now its one giant mesh.
So we are gonna just try and clean up some of the bits and parts to it
[music]
there we are gonna make him walk across the screen even though he has no knees kidna waving his arms... i dunno..
one day I want to make a stickman movie. I dont know why I just like stickmen!
So there he is.. the next step is to apply a material
so we go over to this right hand panel and we go to the little button that says material we press new and we assign the material and
maybe we want to give it a name 'stickman'
Now stickmen are usually black I dont know if I want a black stickman so I will make him a kinda funny colour.
So there he is um.. you can press smooth and flat shading and he looks different ...
He kinda looks.. you know Gumby? I like Gumby . I wanna do an animation like Gumby one day too.
I guess this is sort of remeniscent of Gumby days.
So remove doubles we dont have any and recalculate it. And then I am gonna turn on texture for a second. Flip direction.
Oh there its not quite right. So if we want to make sure all our faces are facing the right way you can go into texture mode there
is other ways to do it but I dont use them always. I am gonna do it this way. I am not a scientific type modeller.
I am kind of a drawer type.
So if you flip this little checkerboard thing it turns on textures and then you will see where the holes are.
So back to solid so there is our dude you might want to texture him I dont know? but for this this is all we are gonna do because this is
like a beginners um thing and its probably enough for you to try and make a funny looking stick man kind of reminiscent of Gumby
and his cohorts
So there we are we will see you another time this is Blender for Dummies and I am gonna tell you if I can learn Blender anyone
can learn how to use Blender. So there we are we will see you in part 2 of this stickman thing..
bye..
