Cam Ash, Instructor: BLET is a 17 week program that we offer here at Wilson Community College.
It runs the gamut; it teaches everything from criminal law, laws of arrest search procedure,
juvenile law, communication skills, and report writing. We do fire arms training, driver
training, subject control and arrest techniques, and lots of physical training. We do stuff
in the classroom and out in the field. We do PT training whether it’s raining, whether
it’s snowing, it doesn’t matter. We are out there in the elements. We do a lot of
work in the classroom but we also have practical exercises like driving, fire arms, subject
control and arrest techniques where we actually go out into the range and do some hands on
training. Once you graduate from Basic Law Enforcement Training, you can get a job in
any law enforcement arena in the state of North Carolina. So we have had folks leave
here and go to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Alcohol Law Enforcement Division,
we have had folks go to different Sheriff’s offices and Police Departments. You can also
go to work with North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission as a game warden. You can go work
as a North Carolina DMV inspector. There are all kinds of things that you can do.
