Hi, I'm Ronda with Safe Kids, and this is Ben. Today we're going talk about bicycle
helmets and the importance of wearing one each and every time you're on a bicycle.
Bicycle helmets can reduce your risk of severe brain injury by about 88 percent, but only
if you wear it. So remember, each and every time you go out, put your helmet on. Just
be smart. Remember everyone needs one -- parents included.
So to fit a bicycle helmet, we want to make sure that it's one your child likes. So remember
if they can help pick it out, they'll wear it each and every time.
The first thing we want remember when putting on a bicycle helmet is it needs to fit flat
across your head, and one to two fingers above your eyebrows. When you look up, you should
be able to see the rim of the helmet. The next is the ears. And our straps should form
a V right under the ear, and they should be snug. And the last thing we want to remember
is the mouth. And when we buckle this up. (Look up, Ben). And when you open your mouth
-- open up wide -- it should give a hug with that helmet. Can you feel it pulling down?
And that should be a correct fit. Remember wear it each and every time to keep
you and your children safe. When it comes to bicycle safety, just a few
things to remember. Make sure your bike's in proper condition, make sure you've maintained
it, and make sure your child knows how to ride it correctly.
So a couple of things to think about -- make sure you have proper air in the tires. Make
sure they know how to use the brakes. Make sure it's the right size for your child. When
they sit on their seat, their feet should be able to touch the ground. Can you touch
the ground for me? There you go. And remember to have reflectors on your bike,
and on your helmet. So if your bike doesn't have a reflector, be sure to add one so it
can be seen and be safe. When you're riding your bike, make sure you
have tight clothing and your shoestrings are tied and tucked in your shoes. Otherwise,
it could become a hazard when you're riding your bike.
Remember the rules of the road whenever you're riding your bike. And parents, remember: you're
a great example for your child, and they are watching. So if you wear your helmet and follow
the rules of the road, so will they.
