The URI research vessel, Endeavor, is on a mission to Haiti. The purpose of the voyage is both
scientific and humanitarian. The scientists from a consortium of universities are going
to be doing geophysical survey work which is towing a side-looking sonar, a high resolution
multi-beam sonar, and a chirp sub-bottom profiler to measure the seismic fault that's right
off of Port de Prince. They're going to be taking some quarry samples to understand the
whole geological structure down there, hopefully try to estimate future events.
The Endeavor crew has teamed up with Warwick-based organization Plan USA to deliver supplies
to Haiti. It's about 50 tents a year, huge tents, really that will be used for transitional
classrooms, and will be probably the first classrooms set up in the affected areas in
Haiti from the quake, so, and they'll be coming from the Rhode Island area.
The Endeavor will make its first stop in Port Everglades, Florida, to pick up scientists
and supplies, and then will continue on its journey to Haiti.
