[Alarm buzzing]
Hello, my name is Monica Santos
and I'm a new reporter here at KSMC news,
it's a beautiful day here at the campus of SMC,
of course, why wouldn't it be?
In today's segment I will be interviewing the school mascot,
Pico the corsair who will be teaching us a lesson on
emergency preparedness.
He was supposed to meet me here but I don't see him.
Let's go find out where he is, follow me.
Well, what do we have here?
It looks like Pico is teaching a class of SMC students,
let's see what's happening.
Pico, well what's going on in here?
Hi, my name is Omid, SMC Student Cadet
and Pico is trying to teach all these students
what to do in case of emergencies.
Oh, I see so this is a like an emergency preparedness class.
Alright so I see a number on the board,
what is that number?
That number is the campus police number,
in case of emergencies you have to call it.
You hear that students?
Save that number in your cell phones
and use whenever there is an emergency on campus.
Well, yeah, that's true this number is very important for you, you have to save it.
310-434-4300,
and you have to save it, just as important as 911.
It should be your first call in case of emergencies
while you are on campus.
310-434-4300
It should be your first call in case of emergencies
while you are on campus.
So, I see some other things around the room
that might be able to help us;
would you mind showing them to me.
Sure.
Okay.
It's all the important information and numbers.
Also, we have a fire alarm right behind you.
You have to pull it down, in case of emergencies or fire.
Fire.
[sniffing]
[screaming]
What do I do?
What do I do?
Fire!
Don't worry, stay down.
[Alarm buzzing]
Wait! don't take the elevator, head for the stairs,
fire can easily spread into the elevator.
Well, it looks like that emergency has been handled.
Pico, it's okay to come back into the classroom now.
Well, ladies and gentlemen, it was exciting, wasn't it?
At least no one was hurt and all the procedures were followed.
But, remember in case a fire breaks out,
remain calm, know your exits,
stay as low as possible on the ground, use the stairs,
call the campus police number, which is
310-434-4300
Um, I was just wondering,
could I ask you some more questions
about other emergencies.
Sure, what would you like to know.
Well.
[Rumbling]
If you ever get caught in an earthquake duck under your desk,
cover your head and hold on to something secure.
If you're somewhere without a desk, stand under a doorway
until the shaking stops and then exit the building.
If you're out in the open just stay away from hazards,
such as falling trees or power lines.
But most importantly, stay calm.
I think what Pico is trying to say is that
in the case of an emergency like this,
make sure that your buddy is safe.
Buddy?
Yes, you should always have a buddy in your class
so that someone is looking after you;
we call it the buddy system.
The buddy system, that is a great idea.
Pico you're so smart.
Hey, so what about those with disabilities?
Good question.
They should be paid particular attention to.
No one should be left behind
even those who can't assist themselves.
Oh, gee great, thanks for the tip.
Excuse me, but uh, who are you?
Oh, well, my name is Sarah,
and I was told to report here.
This is the emergency preparedness class, right?
Yes it is,
but we already had a fire and an earthquake drill.
What else do we need to know?
Well, someone sent me a text
telling me to update this class on general emergencies.
General emergencies?
What's that?
General emergencies can be anything from
a shooter on campus,
to a chemical spill in the neighborhood.
In an event of these emergencies
it's best to stay in this classroom,
listen to your professor, and wait for instruction.
Well that just about wraps up my segment.
I sure learned a lot today, I hope you did too.
Just remember, in the case of an emergency,
know your exits,
stick with your buddy,
keep updated phone numbers and emails on file,
and always call campus police in the case of an emergency.
For KSMC news.
