Is it time to play the game? Other than the countless puns I could be selling right now,
do we really need a next generation WWE game?
According to VideoGamer.com WWE will be making its debut on next generation consoles with
WWE 2K15 - And while we're certainly not done with the predecessor, or the current WWE game,
does it really shout for a "YES" or should we slam the door on its rough history. 2K
certainly have a lot of work before them to make a next generation wrestling game, previous
generation iterations of WWE like Smackdown vs Raw looked atrocious and it seemed as if
Yukes and THQ just didn't utilize the previous generation console power. Of course we shouldn't
forget, Yukes is STILL in on the party, so the answer to the question may be pretty one
sided and yet far from a definite conclusion, we may need WWE 2K15, but will it actually
be good?
That's a generic question we should be asking with every game, but with a franchise solemnly
built on portraying wrestling, it's a damn good question to ask.
What... What are you doing Punk?
The drive behind playing wrestling games is certainly fading, for me anyway. I don't know
about you, but we need WWE 2K15 to rise out of the ashes and show us something unique,
but as with my previous video on the current title in the franchise, can that really happen?
We're talking wrestling here, not some complex campaign built around a war hero that can
find himself in 100's of different scenarios - Sure a run-through of a match may be different,
but the fundamental basis of WWE games have and always will be wrestling, obviously.
It's a yearly thing, I think we've all gathered that by now, but why? Why is it yearly? I
could be a narcissistic prick and say it's a cash grab, companies milking for money and
certainly it could be seen as such a model. When THQ went bust companies crowded to obtain
the license and of course 2K, aka Take Two, now own the wrestling franchise plagued with
the same issues year over year. The sudden change in publisher certainly didn't affect
the workflow that much, not even shaking the overall game quality, mirroring that of its
predecessor. 2K merely changed the name, is that a sign that the WWE game doesn't mean
anything to 2K? Again, that may just be my view, but this cash grab model seems to have
be a core feature of this franchise.
A far more interesting question to ask is what would happen if there was no WWE 2K15,
no 2K16, no WWE game at all? What if that's already happened? What if we haven't really
had a WWE game at all, we've been groomed to enjoy a generic experience filled with
so-called celebrities putting their lives on the line pushing some buttons to gain momentum
and finally finished with a 1 2 3.
Comment over comment claims the last best wrestling game was No Mercy, no mention of
a modern WWE or even Smackdown vs Raw game.
Alright Punk! Cut it out, you're in the fricking game, you're the selling point, jeez.
What if we don't need new WWE games anymore, like I said, the drive to play new games hasn't
been the same. It's fading, unwrapping a new Smackdown vs Raw game and adapting to the
new controls is a feeling I haven't felt since 2009, why? Well, blame it on the generic experience
of just mashing buttons to appeal to a virtual audience that seemingly look worse year on
year.
You talk about stepping up to the next generation, in my eyes the next generation consoles don't
deserve a WWE game, they're too good for it. Heck even the Wii U doesn't deserve WWE 2K15,
definitely not, if 2K passes the current state of the game and blinks at Yukes to release
a half-made game just for the money.
