One thing I've learned as an effective principal is to listen to staff,
especially if you want to improve the quality of instruction.
For example my ELL department came to me one day and said Ms. Zigelman,
what we're doing is not working.
We have a plan that's going to work.
Their plan included
changing the way we grouped our students and increasing the amount of
time
we were going to give to our L students to improve
their language acquisition skills.
The result of our first year and our second year
showed growth especially children moving through the different bands and the
different levels
on the nicest slide exams.
We opened our doors up to other schools who came in to see the work,
and we were immediately identified by the office of the english language
learners,
as having something that was innovative, creative and think out of the box. As
principal of this I really give a lot of leadership to the teachers.
They really ran with this project and all I did was act as facilitator.
They came to me when they said they needed resources,
or they needed additional support.
