Did you know that teeth can be whitened safely? Hi I'm Dr. David Wagner, NorthWood Dental;
Clearwater, FL. And I'm going to to talk today about teeth whitening safety. Teeth whitening
is most commonly done with a hydrogen peroxide solution applied to the teeth in a tray that's
custom made to fit your teeth. So the custom made nature of this tray allows you to control
the amount of solution that you're actually applying to your teeth, though this is one
way to actually ensure the safety of the material that you're using cause you can have a controlled
amount that you're applying to the tooth. Also the concentration of the material can
be adjusted by your dentist if necessary, and he has also desensitizing solutions to
get rid of any sensitivity you might have. The danger in teeth whitening is sometimes
products do not have a way to control the solution that's on the amount of solution
that's on your teeth, or they actually will increase the acidity of the solution to make
it work "faster". Well this can be dangerous, and if you use to much of it over a prolonged
period of time can actually damage your teeth. But following the instructions of course is
always the best policy, but the materials that we use in the dental office cannot really
damage the tooth. There's been not shown damage to the enamel or the supporting tissues, especially
when it's used in the controlled manner which we do it. So that's how you can ensure teeth
whitening safety. I'm Dr. David Wagner, NorthWood Dental; Clearwater, FL.
