It is1988, and the cold war is still a contentious issue around the world.
The race to space was a contest primarily fought between the United States
astronauts and the cosmonauts of the Soviet Union. On August 29 1988
a historical takeoff was observed. The Soviet Union had launched into space
on board with two soviets by the name of (Vladimir) Lyakhov and Dr Valery Polyakov.
the third person was an Afghan colonel by the name of Abdul Ahad Mohmand.
Abdul Ahad Mohmand was born in Sardeh of Afghanistan
in the year 1959 Mohmand once completing his secondary education
went on to become a pilot and persuit to training at the guy during military
Academy in the USSR which is present-day russia
with his credentials increasing he was to undergo training to become an Air
Force pilot
and pursuit training where he was placed under a program to prepare him to become
a Cosmonaut
upon being successfully initiated into the Soviet space program
Abdullah Ahad Mohmand entered into the Soyuz TM-6 mission
and launched into space at exactly 423 GMT.
however it must be noted that
Abdullah Ahad Mohmand was originally a backup cosmonaut and only into the
mission
after the first choice Afghan causing or Mohammed Dawran Ghulam Masom was
disqualified
and rendered unfit to travel given he was diagnosed with appendicitis
While in space norman was involved in several research experiment
He was officialy a research cosmonaut. from here
he also photographed Afghanistan and made other observations of Afghanistan from
space
On September 7 Mohmand and Lyakhov left their space station
and went on board the TM-5. their initial attempt to renter
was hindered by Sun light interference little
is know about how crucial Mohamnd's input was for the saving of the life of the
soviet counterpart and being responsible for the descent back to Earth.
he picked up on the fact that the computer system with two
program on the first landing attempt and was almost a minute away from using the
fuel that they're required to get back to Earth
which then was stop. After this it was another 24 hours before more Mohamand and
Lyakhov eventualy eventually safely return to Eart
landing in Kazakhstan Abdul Ahad Mohmand spent nine days in space
8.85 days to be exact he was awarded the Order of Lenin medal
making him to hero a the Soviet Union
Today Abdul Ahad Mohmand resides got germany he serves as a testament
and a learning lesson for Afghans that with hard work education
and perseverance one can go even as high as the sky
in the service for their nation
