I hold the position of a Team Leader at RBS, handling a discretionary portfolio management, which is basically an asset management product.
People invest money with the banks, who don’t have much knowledge in the stock market or how to invest the money, where to get the return.
I am basically a finance guy and I love to handle figures and do the reporting kind of thing.
I use my creativity to do the various kinds of reports and to also impress my boss and onshore bosses.
The quality which people would like to have to succeed in my kind of job is very good analytical skills.
A good analysis of figures and a good number crunching kind of mind.
The communication skills again forms a very important part, because we need to interact with our onshore controllers, basically from UK.
RBS is one kind of a bank where I have seen that there’s a very good work life balance.
In my previous company, I used to work for even 13 to 14 hours and that too, month end, stretches even more.
But in RBS, what I see, I work for, I stick to a regular timing, nine hours or some hours.
As long as we deliver the process on time, we do it in one hour or do it in five hours, that doesn’t matter, like, that flexibility always is there with my boss.
RBS is the right place to work, because you have a very good culture.
We do enjoy in the office, it’s like, we have a chat together, we talk about the cinemas during the weekends, what we have seen.
We interact with our personal life as well, we have some good friends.
In RBS, one good thing is, there is nothing about hierarchy.
I can approach my boss directly, even my colleagues under me can approach my boss directly.
In five years’ time, I would like to see myself in my boss’s position.
Hopefully, I think my boss doesn’t listen to this!
My name is Madhavan Jothiramalingam and I’m 33 years old.
