At Target we’re just looking for great leaders, basically just people that are comfortable
leading a team, are comfortable with people, are great communicators - you know that’s
kinda what we’re looking for is basically great leaders.
The biggest qualities that I look for is to see someone who’s a self motivator. It’s
kind of hard to see that in that first initial process but they’re coming up to you and
it can happen, you can establish a relationship with that person goes above and beyond just
talking to you, and the interest that really sets them apart from the others.
We hire people not majors. So, regarding do I have a certain candidate in mind, yes I
do, but it’s not going to be revolving around what that person’s major is. It’s specifically
regarding what that person’s strengths and skillsets are, and that’s derived from just
about anything they’ve had experiences with over the past four or five years. So no, we
don’t hire majors but we do hire a certain type of person that has very specific qualities.
We’re looking for work ethic, humility, integrity, and motivational fit. This is,
for us, a sales-based organization, and that’s what we’re hiring for, sales and sales management.
So you want someone with that sales personality.
I guess the candidate that I’m always looking for is the one that projects energy, excellent
communication skills, passion for healthcare, passion for the industry I work for, and just
interest overall.
It depends on the kind of job that we’re looking for as far as what makes a good candidate,
but overall for our business since it is retail we would definitely be looking for someone
who has some interest in retail, who has an interest in customer service, who likes to
be around people, who doesn’t mind having challenging problems maybe come and go because
it’s a fast paced business.
We’re a consulting company, so anything from engineering, marketing, program management,
accounting, finance, it’s a wide variety. So we look for all majors at these career
fairs, of course that are relevant. I think that the biggest thing we’re looking for,
like I talked about before, is the passion for what we do and for our industry, and wanting
to work for a nonprofit that is in energy efficiency. Seeing that passion is what I
look for at career fairs, not necessarily the major.
